Chrono Cross is underappreciated? Back in the day we slobbered all over it at IGN, and we didn't even like it half as much as Andrew Vestal did. Or is it one of those games like Final Fantasy IX that's done the backlash thing for one reason or another in the last 10 years?

Also I dunno if Legend of Mana is really underappreciated either, but I will say it's probably the best Kawazu game.

For what that's worth.

(only so much)

Well, like the "Best Games Ever" for issue 2, this one has a table of contents generated by tallying up a forum vote, so obviously "underappreciated" is left open to personal interpretation. Judging by the list, a lot of people included games that reviewed well but just didn't sell as many copies as they perhaps should have - which I'm not complaining about since it meant I got to write up Okami. (My article references the fact that it was evidently the worst-selling game ever to win multiple Game of the Year awards.) As for Cross, I have a feeling it made it on there due to all the "ZOMG not a worthy successor to Chrono Trigger" backlash or something.

Legend of Mana is a similar deal, I suspect, where it suffers by comparison to people's nostalgia for Secret. I love me some Legend, though. Didn't even realize it was a Kawazu game until recently, though that does totally explain the thoroughly obtuse optional sub-systems. I'd put up with a lot for that art and Shimomura music, though.
