Every year I tell myself I should take it easy on my first bike ride of the season, because I'm not in great shape after not getting out for months and I know it's gonna hurt tomorrow. And every year I completely ignore my own sage advice. I have a crappy saving throw against the urge to explore

Relax, dude, deer hunting season is long over and won't start again until fall.

Can't explain the amphitheater; searching for it lands you with the Daniel Boone Amphitheater in Boone. I can't tell whether or not this article has confused that one with the Hillsborough one or not, but it doesn't have some interesting bits about Hillsborough in it.

Actually, I think that article has it right, because that whole home builder -> mini amusement park story explains a *lot* of the weird shit I found up there. The amphitheater, some things that looked kind of like collapsing train stations that weren't actually on the train line (probably from old carnival stuff), and behind all that there's actually still some sort of home-building operations (can't remember the signs but it may even still say Freeland) which seems to mostly do crane construction stuff off-site now.

Pretty cool.

The only reason I wonder if he got confused is that I feel like Loretta Lynn and the other stars would have been more likely to perform at the one in Boone. I could be wrong, though.

Oh, well, that's possible. Still, if he was trying to drum up big-time tourism, who knows what he pulled off.

Also, check out the pedometer link I added to the main post if you're interested. I *think* the theater is around the little spur I put in north of the campground loop behind DBV. Hard to tell for sure from the sat photos since it's so overgrown, though, and I think it may have collapsed / been demolished further since the last update.
