For the most part I'm loving my new Mac Mini, but one thing about the transition didn't go so well - somehow, when moving over my external HD (which had always been a little flaky) to the new machine, it's file system got corrupted). Gah, harddrive malfunction. That's always such terrible news.

(Also, yay, developer tools! Also also, maybe you can run Crawl now! *innocent*)

What was the disk recovery software you went with? Did you like it? I remember having had a similar problem and spending way too long doing research.

I'm still drooling after the 2600, but I think it's not a good idea for us. We game enough already.

Fortunately, I have another buyer interested in the 2600, or I'd have to make a saving throw against being evil to refrain from further tempting you to buy it.

I don't remember the exact name of the tool I found (not on my home computer right now); it was very bare-bones command-line, but it worked fine, and had a pretty comprehensive list of available file types to look for. I did have to look through my system profiler to find the correct /dev/rdisk number to feed it in order to get it to focus on a particular partition.

Ok, the program I used was PhotoRec, part of the TestDisk suite; info and downloads can be found here:

It looks like it runs on almost any OS. The step-by-step guide is helpful for navigating the text-menu options:
