Excuse me while I rant.

My little brother is 13 years old and smarter than most kids his age. He has this morbidly ignorant English teacher this year who would send him home with D's and fails on his writing assignments because she didn't believe he'd come up with the stories on his own and had copied them off the internet. Without any proof. So as ( Read more... )

That is ridiculous. I would say bring the stuff to another teacher/principal to look at but I know that teachers don't like it when students go behind their back.

Just keep encouraging him. Get him to write things when he's not in school and when he ends up a published author he can shove it in her face.

He's working on a novel. XD There's 50 'chapters' or so already, all about a half page long.

I agree that maybe you should go over the teacher's head. He's doing the work, and if they have no proof of plagiarism (which is so amazingly easy to find just by typing some distinct sentences into Google) then the teacher has no right to fail him just for handing in something that exceeds her expectations. I was so incredibility lucky this never happened to me, because it would have really stunted my writing career x_x When he gets to college, he'll just fly through, though. Most professors are just happy you can string two sentences together, since most undergraduate (and let's face it, graduate) students now-a-days can't write to save their lives.

It's really depressing to hear Emily talk about all of her courses as an education major. Our public schools are just so crappy.. It's ridiculous.

I hope something gets figure out that best suits your brother. Do you have a community college near you? Sometimes they have writer's workshops for younger kids. :)

Luckily the school year is almost over and he'll have different teachers next year. He's doing okay in his other classes.

Yeah... I had quite a few bird courses to pad my GPA while I was in school.

There is one close by. I'll have to look into that.

That's absolutely ridiculous! Is he in a public school? Private high schools can be pretty generous with scholarship money these days (since otherwise they wouldn't have much of a population). If this kind of thing is regular, maybe he should look into it.

Yeah, a public school. The best one in the area, actually. Private schools don't really exist around here unless he wants to register for an online home school.

Aahhh, I see. You guys must have way better public schools than we do than. The one in my town was threatened with a loss of accreditation every few years.

It's so lame that your brother has to suppress his creativity like that. :(

Public schools are the only option in a lot of places here. Most are okay.

He has plenty of other creativity. XD He loves music.

First off - parent meeting STAT. That is not right. That is not fucking cool. That teacher should get their fucking ass handed to them.

Second - ever think about private schooling? I think it might be a good idea. There are a ton of scholarships out there for smart kids.

I know from personal experience that turning into a gifted underachiever is a terrible thing. You sort of screw yourself over in the long run. Also, gifted kids don't learn well in a regular classroom environment.

I think my parents have already talked to her? I dunno what's up.

It's only the one class he's really having a problem with and he loves being in the orchestra and student council too much to leave.
