I think I stole inspirations and words from all over the place, and halfway through writing I was reminded of a NagaTsuyo fic of similar theme, but couldn't trace back at the moment. have added credits.
Title is a reference to
The Beatles' "Two of Us".
Disclaimer: This writing is fictional and has no commercial purpose. Characters are real persons belonging to themselves.
Pairing: Slight Kouichi/Nagase and Tsuyoshi/Nagase
Genre: Reflective, mild angst

Summary: Friends-in-need come in different flavors. Set around Nagase/Ayumi breakup, so yeah, kinda cliched hurt/comfort thing.

kinou_no_koukai's

Chasing Paper
Nagase wouldn't say much about the breakup, reasoning that ladies would not appreciate their ex-es sharing details about past relationships. Kouichi isn't quite convinced -- it is Nagase whom he is concerned about, so what is the problem? Nagase is probably just trying to spare him from sitting through the story, not that Kouichi can be of much help anyway. But so long as the man says he is fine, Kouichi would trust him and leave the subject alone.
When Nagase is still quiet after the fifth bottle, Kouichi figures it out somehow -- not how things have gone, but what they have really meant. Kouichi doesn't understand relationships, but he understands Nagase, and he can still pretend seven bottles are nothing to his near-thirty-year-old stomach if he wants to.
At times like this, Kouichi feels all over again how much he envies that connection, deep enough to affect Nagase this way; he envies that connection so much for what he cannot afford to have. But then Nagase's wide arm-reach encompasses him with the usual ease, the feverish face resting innocently on his neck for a silent repose -- and he realizes all over again how much he cherishes this connection, simple enough to survive any complication; he cherishes this connection so much for what they have chosen not to have.
--
Nagase is careful not to make any direct reference, but Tsuyoshi knows what it is about anyway, and he leaves it at that because he shares both the philosophy and the empathy. They continue to talk in abstract terms, dissecting emotions and viewpoints, not that it would change anything real at this point -- or anything factual, should he call it, because feelings are always more real than all things tangible in Tsuyoshi's world. It is the very reason Nagase has spoken out to him, of a matter Yamaguchi could have offered wiser advices about, a matter Matsuoka could have offered surer distractions from. Probably.
Their glasses are almost untouched except by idle fingertips, and Tsuyoshi abandons his altogether after Nagase's assurance that he could always get another company for that sort of refuge. A familiar face readily comes to mind, and Tsuyoshi makes a mental note of homework to do so as to keep work meetings short and give his partner more private time, however little.
At times like this, Tsuyoshi regrets all over again that he is not much of an uplifting personality, like the way Inocchi can always cheer him up, the way Nagase is always comfortable to be around; he feels sorry that sorrowful tunes are all his guitar can emote at the moment, as his music has always been to express his mood and not to change it. But then Nagase's smooth strings join his with the usual ease, the powerful blues accentuating his melancholic ballad in a roaring release -- and he remembers all over again what he has that he can always give; he remembers what they have that he will never yield.
