Thanks for your ideas :) I let my mind wander sometimes and come up with some gems, sometimes all it results in is another sad, undetailed cliche. But I'll give it a try and let my mind roll around where it wants without direction, and see what comes of it!
Hmm, that's a little tricky - stories come to me in scenes. Then I write plot outlines and character descriptions. Then I start writing.
I'm not a big fan of walking away/taking a break - though I know it works for some (most?) people. I just sit there and force it out bit at a time, even if it's sentence by sentence, word by word. It doesn't always result in the best writing, but that can be fixed later.
Alternatively, I skip ahead and write a couple of scenes that are in my head and then go back.
But in reality, the biggest help is my plot outline. For me (because this is just how I work), it's like a road map. Once you have that you know where you're going and how to get there - but you can also take all the detours you like.
Thank you for sharing your writing style! When I started writing back in high school I was a pretty instinctual writer - I didn't plot things out ahead of time, write character profiles or descriptions... things would just grow as I wrote. It probably wasn't too bad when I was only writing such short pieces, but now I feel like I have no base from which to create anything longer.
I think I'll have to investigate and try the road-map idea, and use some mind-wandering to help fill in the gaps. Great ideas!
