Episodic Anime

So lately I realized I've gotten really into episodic series (or series that don't have a continuous storyline). This sort of amuses me because one of the main reasons I became an anime fan is I liked that the stories were continuous, sort of like following a novel plot ( Read more... )

I think Mushishi isn't for everyone (it can be slow moving at times). But I liked that in every episode I felt I really got to know the characters. Sometimes better than the characters you get to know in a full length series. Mushishi is actually my favorite of the ones I listed.

I am not sure if journey is a subgenre but I think it should be.

It's not so much that I dislike shounen, because I really like Gurren lagann and love the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. I also like things like Hikaru no Go and Rurouni Kenshin. I just am tired of never ending shounen stories. Well with the exception of One Piece. :)

But thank you for your suggestions. I don't know if Paranoia Agent is exactly what I am looking for but I should check it out on the basis that it was done by Kon. I like his style and I especially loved Millennium Actress. I also still need to watch Paprika.

I never heard of that movie before but it actually sounds like something I would really like.

No, I don't mind, friends back.

Some of my fandoms (for instance, XXXHOLiC and similar mangas by CLAMP) are kinda episodic with a slowly-developed plot. I do like episodic stuff a lot, whether if it's pure or a hybrid. It's kind of funny Kino and Mushishi are in my top five of favorite anime (haven't read enough of the manga) and they're both pure episodic.

I liked an episodic manga that just got licensed: Yumekui Kenbun. It feels a lot like Mushishi, except it's more on the horror genre. No travelers, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Yumekui Kenbun does sound sort of interesting. I don't like most modern day slasher horror stories but I do like more traditional horror and folklore stories. That is sort of like Mononoke too actually.

And Kino and Mushishi are both awesome. They are definteily the two series that showed me how great episodic anime can be.
