Shiki

I should know by now not to doubt any series based on Fuyumi Ono's work. With this, Juuni Kokki, and Ghost Hunt I feel she is an amazing storyteller (I can't say writer because I never read her actual works). She is also lucky to get good adaptions of her work and what I like is so far each of her works are very different. Sure you can argue that ( Read more... )

My first recommendation for Fuyumi Ono is actually 12 Kingdoms which is one of the absolute best fantasy series. Ghost Hunt while horror is much lighter overall than Shiki. It's a fun series.

I am not 100% sure if you will like Shiki. It's a dark series and doesn't necessarily have many sympathetic characters. I am not entirely sure what you mean by theme though. I like Shiki because it does take an overused story element and on one hand goes back to its roots but also does something interesting and unique with it.

The non-sympathetic characters kind of ties into the theme but I can't say more without spoiling.

I did think that is what you meant by theme but I didn't want to say it outright (it's pretty obvious so I am not sure why I am worried about Spoilers LOL). But it's definitely takes away the romanticism of these characters you see in so many other stories which actually makes it feel fresh for me.

I haven't seen any of her series yet, but you just inspired me to add them to my list! I'll download them as soon as I get my new laptop in! :D

I am sort of surprised you never saw 12 Kingdoms. But yes definitely recommended that one foremost. It might be the best fantasy anime out there (although I am also quite fond of Escaflowne). :)

Your welcome it does start off as a traditional vampire story as I told you earlier but I think it eventually develops into something more. Not a perfect series but a good dramatic watch.

I followed the manga for this a long time ago before I fell out of it. Do you know how well the anime follows the manga? I remember liking the character designs and might put this on the list of things to check out. I haven't watched an anime in ages.

I am pretty sure it follows the manga closer than the novels, just things might be in a slightly different order and some details might be left out.

I also heard that in later episodes they might take things more from the novels than manga because the manga was behind the anime at that point.
