I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the book because who knows as a teenager I might have liked it. I know I used to like non-scary vampire stories like Buffy and Interview with the Vampire. But now I am definitely sick of them.
I remember seeing scenes of Nosferatu as a kid and being so scared I turned off the TV. As an adult I was able to take the movie much more. But I think the whole older feeling to the movie adds to its creepiness and authenticity (the locations where the movie were filmed were gorgeous).
I avoid most popular vampire stuff today. As a teenager I liked some of it but now I am sick of it. Give me the real stuff like Dracula.
To be fair, one of the allures of a vampire is their sexiness. They use that to attract their prey. Unfortunately, Stephanie Meyer threw that aspect out the window.
Vampires do not have to be sexy. That's just something that comes from popular fiction. Even Dracula (which is the most well known vampire) is just one story. It's probably the story that really popularized the vampire. But legends about vampires were around much longer than that.
