Okay first of all I apologize to everyone on my FL for this sudden influx of FMA posts. But I don't know the new anime and fandom activity have sparked a burning passion. I am sure it won't last I thinkOkay one thing I always see FMA anime proponents say is the anime did the Hughes and Nina thing better because they were around longer in the anime ( Read more... )

Hooray XD

But gosh you know I wouldn't think this post would do it but well I am glad it did. I think you will love it especially when you get to the stuff that really diverges from the 1st anime. Not that I don't think the early stuff is excellent but since it is similar it is too easy to compare everything. :)

As for the FMA manga it is one of only two series I still follow with scanlations (the other being One Piece). But I also collect both the english GN and the Japanese tanks. But I was able to collect them from the beginning so yeah it's a lot harder and more expensive to collect something that already has 18 volumes so I understand wanting to start with just the scans for now.

You're exactly right, the first anime put so much effort into making people cry over Hughes, but his death doesn't actually have much significance in the show itself. :/ It doesn't motivate Roy nearly as much as it does in the manga, and when Ed finds out he just angst for a few minutes before it's forgotten, where in the manga Ed & Al feel personally responsible to the point that they even consider giving up their quest, and makes them determined not to get anyone else killed.

And yay, Monster! Finally.

Yeah quite honestly I feel like the first anime was way too focused on making the viewer feel sad but when it came to plot they didn't know what they were doing. I am all for good drama but there should be a definite purpose to it besides shock value.
