It's a cake made for Mardi Gras in the South. It often decorated in Mardi Gras colors & sometimes has a trinket baked inside it & supposedly, who ever get the piece with trinket hosts next year's party or provides the cake. Living up north, I've never had any, nor do I really know all that much about it, except that it's a thing. XD
To clarify the king cake a little better. There are different kinds of King Cakes all over the world, but the ones Kira was talking about are specific to New Orleans and are served during the Carnival season from Epiphany Eve to Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). It was a tradition brought over from France and now come covered in colored sugars in New Orleans' MArdi Gras colors and in a ring shape. They are named for the biblical three kings and celebrates the visitation from Magi to the Christ child.
There is supposed to be a trinket or baby inside. The person who gets the baby is supposed to host next year's party.
Thanks for clearing this up, Kat! I had no idea that it was a New Orleans thing only. XD I saw pix of them online & just figured it was a southern thing. XD With a BIG PARTY held in New Orleans every year. XD
