Leo & Knut: The New Power Couple

Vanity Fair's second annual Green Issue hits news stands this week, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and baby polar bear Knut on the cover. This is the first I've heard of Knut, but my goodness he's a charmer! Lots of videos of the cutie are on YouTube; I started here.

BABY polar bears are cute beyond belief but therein lies the trouble. People remember only the cuteness and for whatever reason do not recognize adult polar bears as _dangerous_.

My Dad emailed me some rather graphic pics of the injuries that were polar bear-inflicted upon some camper who'd camped in PB territory. The title of the forwarded email was 'Beware of Polar Bears'. Well duh. Here was my response to that email:

Well duh, of course bears are dangerous. The point being made with Knut is that here is an adorable baby animal whose natural habitat is being steadily eroded by our lack of environmental care. He's the perfect poster bear for the cause.

Good point, Kira. Plus, the baby polar bear will live out it's life in captivity. They plan to mate it in captivity and have more little cute baby polar bears. I do wonder what made Knut's mum reject him in the first place.
