Summary: It's called the 'gift' or 'soul' by most. A strange, mysterious force only few possess on the planet that is half ocean and half desert. The people on the planet have lived in harmony with each other and their environment for centuries but something yet unknown is threatening to throw everything into chaos.

“A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”

(- Oscar Wilde)

Pain, suffering, cries for help and screams of death - the voice became distorted and instead of a steady, calm stream, turned into an erratic torrent that threatened to drown him. And then there was the light again - the light of that odd crystal, then the light of the sick star, the eerie light that signaled death and destruction. Iida bolted up from the bed with a soft gasp. Cold sweat was running down his forehead, his whole body. He had to wrap his arms around himself to will the shivers to stop.

“Something is wrong with you,” Iida flinched when he heard the voice from the darkness next to him. When his eyes adjusted to his surroundings, he found Yokoo there, looking at him with worried, dark eyes. “Something has been wrong with you for a while and you didn’t tell me about it.”

Iida laughed dryly and averted his gaze again. Who had he been to think that he would be able to hide something like this from Yokoo for long? Or at all, really. He was almost disappointed in himself. “I didn’t want to make you worry on top of everything that’s been happening and is still happening. I also didn’t think much of it. It might just be something temporary. Maybe some deep-rooted anxiety inside of me because I have never been out on missions much with you guys.”

“Don’t lie, Kyouhei. I know you better than that,” Yokoo shifted closer and wrapped his arms around the other comfortingly and pulled Iida against his body. “This started before we even left.”

“I cannot hide anything from you, can I?” Iida closed his eyes and leaned his head against Yokoo’s shoulder heavily. “It started with that weird crystal Nikaido and Senga brought back. The voice, or at least I think it is the voice, has been behaving oddly since then. I’ve only ever heard it talk to me before, which is why I called it ‘the voice’ but now I can actually feel things, too. But they aren’t pleasant things. There is only pain and suffering, agony and fear.”

Yokoo hummed softly. “Is that why you have been so tired lately?”

“It appears so,” Iida nodded. “And things got worse when that odd light appeared the other day,” Iida said. “I wonder if they’re connected. That light and the crystal.” He sighed softly and relaxed.

“See? You feel a lot better after you get things off your mind and don’t just keep them locked in,” Yokoo commented, his words were gentle but Iida knew the other was scolding him, reprimanding him.

He smiled. “Thanks, Wataru. And I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I know you didn’t want to bother me with something that seemed so random and all but you know, I don’t just care about the mission and I’m not a different person just because I’m with my family now. I care about you, too. I care about you a lot. And we said we trust each other, right? So tell me if there’s something wrong. Family or not and mission be damned,” Yokoo insisted.

Silence spread between them then but they didn’t need to speak anymore as their souls interlaced. That alone spoke more than hundreds of thousands of words.

The intimate moment was interrupted by an orange and a white glow from their bedside table, followed by a pink one. “Taisuke is calling for us. He must have found something out,” Yokoo noted. “Or he wouldn’t be calling for a meeting again so soon.”

“Let’s go then. It seems urgent, so we shouldn’t let the other’s wait,” Iida nodded and was about to make a move to get up when he was suddenly assaulted by another wave of pain and agony. The eerie, sickly light exploded in front of his inner eye and he clutched at his head, groaning with pain. It numbed the rest of his body and made it impossible for him to move. Iida tried to shut it out and regain control over his mind and body but it was difficult.

Until he felt something, no, someone there with him. Yokoo was shielding him. Their soul bond hadn’t broken off completely yet. The other was sharing some of the pain with him, bore one part of his soul’s suffering and thus made it better, made it less painful.

It lasted for a few long moments until there was silence again and he felt Yokoo draw back. “You shouldn’t have done that, Wataru,” his breaths were coming out in shudders still.

“There are a lot of things that I shouldn’t have done and yet I still did,” Yokoo replied and took a few deep breaths himself. “How did you handle that on your own until now?” He looked at the other. “I need to punch everyone in the face who calls you weak and useless once more.”

That made Iida smile a little bit. “Don’t. It’ll just get us all into trouble.” He tried to stand again. “I think I’ll be okay again now.”

“Alright. Let’s go then.”

Before they left the room, Iida asked, “Do you think we should tell the others about this?”

“Eventually we should. But let’s see what Taisuke found out first.”

The meeting did not start with Fujigaya thought. Something else had made it to the top of the list of things to be reported and talked about first.

“We saw it again just now. Just before we were going to leave,” Miyata told the other members of the group once everyone had gathered. “The weird light. But it came from a different place today. A slightly different one at least. One of the other servants in the house was wondering whether Sunäa was setting up for some light festival because they saw the lights, too.”

Tamamori nodded, “I saw it, too. And it was just as everyone described it. Kind of eerie and sick looking.” He shivered a little as if to emphasize his point.

Kitayama frowned, “So the light has been coming from around Sunäa after all. They must know for sure now because we’re close enough now. Do you guys think we should get in touch with Master Yara? Could it be some kind of sign?”

“We’ll be in Sunäa early tomorrow morning, maybe even tonight, depending on how the winds are,” Fujigaya said. “I say we wait until we can meet up with Master Yara.”

“I’m with Gaya on that one,” Senga agreed. “I can feel Master Yara’s presence. He’s there and he seems fine. At least from what I can tell. It feels the same as always.” Out of their group, Senga was the only one who had a special relationship with the master they were going to meet. Among the eight of them, he was the only one who had been brought in and trained by Master Yara. Everyone else had been under the care of either Master Takizawa, Master Tsubasa and in Iida’s case Master Ma’yaa, although Iida, too, had trained under Master Takizawa first.

And sometimes, there was still a bit of that special master and student bond left that allowed them to at least detect the life-force of their master whenever it was nearby.

“Well, that is good news at least,” Yokoo noted. “Anything else that happened?”

The others shook their heads. “Alright, so it’s your turn, Taisuke. Why did you call use here in the first place? Were you able to find something out?”

Fujigaya nodded, “I told you I was going to talk to some people higher up in the hierarchy of this city, didn’t I? Well, I managed to talk to the captain himself today.”

There were a few raised eyebrows and Nikaido whistled softly. “Somebody has connections. As expected of you, Mr. Upper City Level.”

“I will get straight to the point,” Fujigaya ignored the other’s comment. “And I’m afraid what I am going to tell you won’t sit well with all of us.” He closed his eyes and made short pause before he finally said, “It was that wretched light again. The very light we just talked about, I’m afraid.”

“What was?” Nikaido asked, wondering why Fujigaya had left something out.

Kitayama seemed to understand though, “The attack on the tower?”

Fujigaya nodded, “It happened during the day, so that’s why it probably wasn’t noticed by people at all or at least not by many. But he noticed. He said the instruments were behaving weirdly. And then the tower seemed to be rocked by some kind of explosion but there was no physical damage on the outside or anything. He described it in a way that seemed as if the inside of the tower had been attacked only. A few instruments were damaged but nothing that couldn’t be fixed. And since nobody seemed to have noticed anything, nothing was reported to anyone outside. Only he and his crew know about it. And they all saw it. That eerie light.”

The eight of them shared looks with each other. Things weren’t looking good and more and more worrying pieces of news and information were coming on. They all hoped that after arriving in Sunäa in a couple of hours, Master Yara would be able to tell them more about what was going on.

But despite Senga’s assurances that the master was fine, it was no guarantee that nothing had happened to him and that the weird lights they had witnessed had left Sunäa unscathed.
