Summary: It's called the 'gift' or 'soul' by most. A strange, mysterious force only few possess on the planet that is half ocean and half desert. The people on the planet have lived in harmony with each other and their environment for centuries but something yet unknown is threatening to throw everything into chaos.

“Give light and people will find the way.”

Tamamori and Senga were sitting at a fountain somewhere in the upper city gardens. It was a very small green oasis but it was a very nice one nevertheless. Greenery was somewhat of a luxury for them after all. The garden at the ghayi was nice but it was small and confined and the large gardens of Dréd-Son were no longer green, nor were they quiet really, at least the ones accessible to the general public.

Senga sighed softly when his bare legs touched the water in the fountain. The water felt nice. Not just because it was hot and they had walked for a bit but also because he liked the water.

“Say, Senga, you have gone on errands with just Nikaido, right? How do you guys manage?” Tamamori asked. He’d told Master Takizawa and the others that he was okay and that things would be alright but that didn’t stop him from being a little bit worried still.

“Nh?” Senga looked up. “Ah, it’s your first time to go with Miyata, right? Or well, someone who isn’t Kitayama or Fujigaya?” He smiled at his friend. “It’s not bad, really. The first time, it was weird, yes. It was just us and there wasn’t any third person with us. I think Nika would turn around to ask Yokoo or Kitayama or Fujigaya at times still, who obviously didn’t answer because they weren’t there. I did it, too but we got used to it. We had each other, we knew each other well, and we still do. We know that if the other is there, things will be okay.”

He looked up towards the darkening sky. “I know I can rely on Nika. Always. When we combine our souls, I feel safe.” Senga looked at Tamamori. “Have you ever shared your soul with Miyata?”

Tamamori shook his head. “No. Neither of us ever offered or suggested it.”

Senga’s smile turned gentle, “Miyata is too polite to offer something like that. Especially to you.”

“You mean he would?” Tamamori blinked.

Chuckling softly, Senga commented, “Sometimes you’re oblivious to the simplest things, Tama. And I guess this is something no things can tell you about because Miyata hasn’t really told anyone or anything either. It’s up to us to pick it up.” He tilted his head and looked at the other. “Maybe you rely too much on what things tell you. You might be neglecting your own senses? You’re not looking for your own answers. You just accept what you’re being told.”

Tamamori had forgotten how observant Senga could be sometimes. The other had probably hit right on the mark. “Nothing ever talks about him, I guess.”

“That’s because the things have probably noticed it, too?” Senga’s smile turned warm, “And maybe they also think that these things should be discovered by you yourself, Tama. There are some things that cannot be put into words, that nobody else can tell you.”

“Why haven’t you been promoted to the level of a master yet?” Tamamori joked but smiled back at the other. “I guess you’re right. I’ll just have to let things come and experience them.”

Senga nodded, “Yup.”

He looked down again and his eyes wandered over to the stairs which led up to this garden. “I wonder where the others went? They said they’d be back with some food soon. But it feels like they’ve been gone longer than they should have.” Senga could still feel Nikaido out there though and the other hadn’t been in distress or anything, so things were probably okay. Maybe.

“Maybe Miyata’s just slow again,” Tamamori shrugged but he couldn’t help but turn a worried glance at the staircase as well. The others were late indeed.

The three in question had actually been on their way back to the garden when something had caught their eye. Since the streets had been too busy, they had taken a route leading them around the houses on a wall-walk. One part of the walk had been high enough that it offered them a good view past the roofs and buildings and at the desert. The sun had already set by that time but there had still been an odd light in the distance - an eerie, strange and unfamiliar light.

Fujigaya looked at the horizon and narrowed his eyes, squinting as he tried to see more. “What is that? It’s the middle of the night. There shouldn’t be something like this. It’s none of the known watchtowers either, the only ones who light beacons in the darkness.”

“I can’t see a thing,” Nikaido commented. “But I have a bad feeling about this.”

Miyata frowned, remembering the story he and Tamamori had listened to back at Dréd-Son. “A sick star?” he whispered softly, more to himself than to the others really but Fujigaya seemed to have picked it up with his keen ears.

“What did you just say, Miyata?”

“It’s nothing more than a story that an old man was telling at a café back in the capital,” Miyata shook his head. “It might not mean anything.”

“It might not mean anything but it could mean something,” Fujigaya eyed the younger male. “Spill.”

Nikaido looked at the two, “Maybe we should share whatever it is he has to say with the others? Kento and Tama are probably waiting for us.” He looked around wearily. The odd feeling in his stomach wasn’t going away. “And maybe we shouldn’t talk about it out here but somewhere else, somewhere safe.”

Fujigaya nodded, “Maybe you’re right. I’ll let them know. Let’s go.”

Kitayama had been napping on his bunk in a shady tavern in the lower city when something roused him from his sleep. A cold shiver ran down his spine. He looked around to try and detect any possible source for that cold and foreboding feeling but he found nothing. He was alone and there were no eyes on him.

Stepping over to the window, he pushed it open. A gust of night air came in and he took a deep breath. No, he couldn’t feel anything out of the ordinary anymore. But he was positive that just now, for one short moment, there had been something. Kitayama had learned to trust his gut feeling. It had pointed him in the right direction and saved his ass a couple of times already.

When the room turned a little chilly, he closed the window again or was about to but then a message reached him. The others were calling for a meeting.

So something had happened after all. He just hoped it wasn’t something bad - but he already knew it would be something that was at least unnerving. This whole mission felt like that after all. The feeling of slight unease and discomfort was like a steady undercurrent and as such always present.

Pulling on a cloak, he made his way to the designated meeting place. Luckily, it wasn’t too far away from where he was. The eight of them had decided to split up a little bit so that they could cover different groups of people in different areas to ensure that they were able to take in as much information as they could. Kitayama was staying in the lower city area, where the shady folk resided. The people who did and knew things that weren’t exactly legal in some cases.

Information on almost anything and anyone could be found in this area usually.

Kitayama hadn’t been disappointed. He had come across a few interesting stories during the past few days but there had been nothing that was related to the current mission. Just information and stories he had stored away for later, for a time when they might become useful. One never knew when some seemingly random information could become useful after all.

Also, he wanted and needed to blend in with the crowd in this part of the city after all. People wouldn’t suspect him if he knew what was going on and what was going around.

Jumping onto a wall-walk he took a shortcut to get to his destination.
