Was it the most entertaining superhero movie I’ve ever seen? Hell no, the first Avengers film still holds that title, and probably always will.
Was it at least the best DC movie I’ve ever seen? Nope. That honor still goes to the movies starring Christopher Reeve, Heath Ledger, and now, Gal Gadot.
Was it a good script? Not really, and I mean no disrespect to Joss Whedon. He had to work within the story Zack Snyder had in mind and had already started filming, and let’s just say Snyder’s story was of about the same quality as the rest of his DC films.
Were there awkward shifts between Snyder’s tone and Whedon’s? I know others will say yes, but all I saw was a movie that had room for lighter moments, and even a bit of humor (which didn’t always work, but still, the attempt was sorely needed).
Was it a waste of my time and money? No, even with everything else I’ve written above. Maybe I’m speaking as someone who went into the theater with really low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised, but that actually wasn’t so bad. I daresay I even had moments of fun.
What did I like about the movie? Superman smiled! Superman laughed! Superman joked! I just cannot tell you how much that meant to me! Actually, it seemed every character, both leading and supporting, had at least one small moment to display a sense of humor (yes, even Batman). The movie wasn’t a laugh fest, by any means, but at least I didn’t leave the theater more depressed than when I went in. Thank you, Joss Whedon! I’m also glad the movie was under two hours. I don’t know if that made for a better story, because I heard they had to cut a lot of stuff, but it made for a tighter one, which is fine by me. I’ll wait for the DVD to get the full story, when I can pause it to use the bathroom.
Did the movie have its flaws? Dear god, yes, too many to go into here. Suffice to say this movie, like every one that came before it save Wonder Woman, feels like another rush job in an attempt to catch up with Marvel’s success, which is just not going to work. Marvel took its time carefully building up to the first Avengers movie, and it shows in the quality of the scripts. Somehow the folks at DC either still don’t get that, or feel they have no choice but to stubbornly continue on their chosen path. It’s a shame, because my favorite heroes deserve so much better.
It's pretty sad that things have gotten to the point where I have to say, "Don't go in there expecting a great movie, and maybe you'll like it," but that's where we are. As a DC fan, I dreaded sitting through this movie, but now I'm rather glad I did.
