Anon from above here. I can now admit to myself that this will never be finished as originally intended, but I also feel like a shithead for selfishly making such a hype about something and never actually sharing it. So I'm posting a significant portion of what I wrote in the hopes that it can sort of stand on its own. In medias res, I guess? Apologies for the sort of half-heartedness of it all, but I figure a half-hearted fill is better than no fill (maybe).

The sharpness of Arthur’s need dies down after the first few weeks, and the primal want is replaced with something softer and tamed. At times, he aches with it, this new quiet thing, and he knows that it is the beginnings of grief twining through his yearning. He only lets himself indulge in it when he is away from Merlin or sure that Merlin is asleep. It claws at his chest, the weight of it. Leaves him heaving with his head buried in his pillow ( ... )

A smile begins to curl Arthur’s lips as he takes the clothes and retreats to a corner. The used clothes fit him ridiculously well, and he rolls up the sleeves of the shirt and smoothes down his hair as best he can before turning back towards Merlin. Merlin has his back to him, taking various things out of the container and fussing with their arrangement on the table.

Arthur clears his throat as he walks back towards Merlin.

“God, Merlin, sorry I’m late. You wouldn’t believe what happened to me on the way over here. There was this family of deer just sitting in the center of the road. They would not move for anyone. It was an absolute farce ( ... )

Arthur keeps it together until the moment he sinks inside Merlin, Merlin’s arms and legs wrapped tightly around him, Merlin’s mouth pressing wet and messy kisses against his neck as he moves. But the warmth of Merlin, the sense of closure that had always come with finally being inside him, a soft comfort, feels tragic to Arthur now. Like an ending.

A sudden current of grief rips through him, and Arthur bites his lips to keep them from gaping open in the rush of sorrow. He stops himself from letting out a sob, but can’t help the few tears that slip out and drop onto Merlin’s shoulder.

Merlin is quiet before he loosens his arms to slip his fingers through Arthur’s hair.

“Arthur, please,” he says softly. “Just for a few more hours. Let me have this.”

“I know,” Arthur gasps out, wrecked. “Shit, shit. I’m so sorry. I just - Merlin. Merlin.He moans and drop his head to Merlin’s shoulder, biting Merlin’s collarbone to try to keep himself anchored, to try to find his focus in Merlin’s happiness. Merlin only fingers Arthur’s ( ... )

Oh anon, that was perfectly lovely and heartbreaking. I've had hold on to the idea that Arthur's dream is their next reincarnation because anything else is just too sad. (And, just so you know, it didn't feel half-hearted or unfinished at all.)

OH gods, I haven't cried like that in a very, very long time. Look what you do to me! I'm typing this with my eyes closed because I can't see anyways!

That being said, this is probably one of the most beautiful pieces I've read on the kink meme, the emotion is just incredible, how well you've written it, it comes through so well.. The scene with Merlin's last dinner.. Gods, that broke my heart, I started crying halfway through.

I can't even tell you how much love I have for this. If you do de-anon at some point, I very much hope you post a link here, so I can mem' it, and I will be reccing this like crazy.
