Not that he’d ever say so to Morgana, but her brother - step-brother - was a complete and utter prat. Merlin glowered at the red and gold blur that was Arthur Pendergast rocketing toward the goal and, unseen by Gwen and Morgana, pretended to crush Arthur’s miniature prat head between his thumb and forefinger while the girls pointed out the others Merlin had already met at school. There was Morgana’s boyfriend Leon, wearing number fifteen and towering over most of his teammates; Lance in number twelve, and his best friend and line mate Percy Gallois in thirteen. Merlin feigned interest in the endless drills the lads on both teams put themselves through, hiding his relief when the buzzer sounded and both teams headed off the ice. “What do you think so far?” Gwen asked eagerly ( ... )

I've saved you the game play-by-play. I think we've covered so far that they're at a hockey game Merlin isn't exactly enjoying! =P Onward!

The celebration after the game was awkward. First of all, Merlin was unclear as to why winning the very first game of the season warranted any sort of party - shouldn’t that be held until the end? Second, Merlin lamented as Gwen locked his upper arm between the crook of her elbow and her ribs on the way down to the lower level, he didn’t know these people. It was not, as Morgana insisted, a chance for him to make new friends. It was a chance to be reminded that he was the scrawny, out of place exchange student who’d been embarrassed in the middle of a school corridor by the team celebrity and his friends. Merlin desperately tried to beg off, citing homework and jetlag and everything in between, but Uther Pendergast ended up clapping one heavy, terrifying hand on his shoulder and insisted, which settled the manner. ”That means he likes you!” Gwen hissed excitedly ( ... )

Haha! Locker room antics and half-naked Arthur!

Uther is lovely, btw. Being all imposing and scaring poor Merlin.

Just keep it coming, dear author.

I really love Uther - I think he could do great things as the president/general manager of a hockey team! =P

And yes! Gotta give Merlin his first real bit of Arthur-related eye candy! hahaha!

Trying to post a little extra tonight, because I'm teaching the next few days and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to finish!

And oh yes, there was no mistaking that falling expression - the closed-off, territorial expression that made Merlin grin a wolfish challenge despite the fact he was starting to feel uncomfortable and irritable all over again, and despite the air chilling with something which was likely due to them standing with the dressing room door open and cold hockey arena air coming in behind them, and not to Merlin being an overdramatic git. “We’ve met,” Merlin said in reply to Morgana’s expectant smile, that fake challenging one plastered across his own face, “a few times. We’re lab partners in biology and we’re in the same maths class”.

Morgana slapped Arthur’s shoulder. “You ass, you didn’t tell me that!”

“Well, we haven’t had a lab yet,” Merlin said quickly. “Not until next week. Arthur can’t be expected to remember everything, can he? Not when he’s so recently taken a blow to the head”.

That made him ( ... )

Arthur rolled his eyes. “Come on, Merlin; you know the answer to that question”.

“Sorry?”

“Look at yourself, mate”. The patronising git! “You could do with a little social credit. Everyone thinks you’re strange, a nerd, and…well”. And he aimed a pointed look, one Merlin had grown tired of in year three, at the side of Merlin’s head - specifically, Merlin’s ears.

Merlin didn’t bother to ask him to expound on what he meant. He pulled a fist back and, just once, let fly.

And that was how Merlin ended up in the principal’s office, sitting next to an Arthur Pendergast with a sluggishly-bleeding lip, on his second-and-a-half week in a Canadian high school.

Arthur told anyone who’d asked he’d taken a fist to the face during a preseason game. The only one who knew otherwise was Mr. Kilgrath, who really had rubbish timing and had witnessed the last few moments of the exchange on his way back from lobby duty.

“Well this is awesome!” Morgana was saying eagerly. “We don’t have to work out a time for some huge Welcome to Canada party ( ... )

Author, I think I love you! The only thing I watch other than Merlin is hockey, and I'm so tickled about this, you have no idea (well, you probably do have some idea!). Thank you thank you!

Wow. I'm intrigued by the relationship between Arthur and Merlin. It's clear Merlin thinks Arthur hates him, but as we don't get Arthur's POV we don't know that for sure. Merlin, on the other hand, seems to dislike Arthur as a person, but finds him hot (well, who wouldn't).

I'm glad you haven't made Arthur stupid and Merlin bright, that would have been too easy, I think. Things get more nuanced like this.

I'm wildly in love with this fic!

Thank you for commenting; I'm glad you're enjoying the ways I've written the characters - I decided immediately that Arthur wasn't going to be 'the stupid one' and Merlin 'the smart one'...neither of them are stupid (though they do stupid and/or ignorant boy things! hahaha!) in canon and I definitely didn't want to change that!

I hope the one-character POV works for you; I wanted to really put the readers in Merlin's shoes a bit, and keep them in the dark and kind of confused as much as him! Don't want to give things away too early! =D

This is delightful. I love Merlin's mental eye rolling at the rabid fannishness of his new peers. It's a culture they were born into, so he can't be arsed to just jump in line and start with the adoration, too. Arthur being a total git hasn't endeared him to the sport either but it seems a half dressed Arthur is a bit of a draw.

I wonder what the hell is going on in Arthur's head. He's giving Merlin mental whiplash and causing the poor boy to lash out physically. It's all making for a ripping read.

Thank you so much for the fantastic comment! I've definitely been drawing a little on my own (reversed) experience, going from a hockey-loving culture to a rugby-obsessed culture where I was happy to accompany friends to matches and to pubs, and could appreciate their enthusiasm, but wasn't quite there long enough to be totally assimilated! xD

I hope you continue to enjoy the story as I post!!

His trouble with Arthur didn’t mean that Merlin was miserable. It didn’t mean that he spent all his time ducking into corners and avoiding the prat, or that he spent his evenings locked in his bedroom at Gwen’s weeping at his mother over Skype. In fact, Merlin was quite content in London. London had its ups and downs, but nearly a month into his year at Avalon Secondary Merlin had found a comfortable, enjoyable routine. School began at 8.20 each morning so at 7.30, nearly to the second, Merlin, Gwen and Tom were at the table eating breakfast. Also at 7.30-nearly-to-the-second a damp-haired, frazzled Elyan burst past them with a shout of Morning!, banged the door open and sprinted to Arthur’s car, which was waiting in the drive. They had a routine of their own, in which Arthur made the rounds and picked up Lance, Gwaine, Percy and Leon from their homes or billet houses. Ten minutes later it was Merlin and Gwen’s turn to hurry out the door when Morgana pulled up for them and beeped twice, often still applying her lip gloss in her ( ... )

Aha! Morgana loves unhealthy food! See, small details like this is what pulls me in, because I'm strange. Usually, Morgana tends to be über-healthy in fics, and I like see her being an obsessive fan and eating at McDonalds (not that I condone McDonalds or anything).

And Gwaine! Can't wait to see more of him. And his hair. :)
