Arthur/Merlin Jack Sparrow's compass

Arthur buys a compass that is unable to tell north from south, but always points him to where Merlin is.

Merlin goes ahead, beating back the undergrowth to allow them a straight path, and Arthur follows, keeping one eye on the rock as it points the way, as sure and straight as a ray of moonlight. Soon, they come to an open section, and Merlin drops back, picking leaves from his hair.

“Remind me why we're doing this again?” he says. “I mean, we don't want to actually go to the north star, right ( ... )

So excited XD

I'm glad Arthur figured that out fairly quickly since we all know he isn't actually that oblivious, and the face that Arthur is comforted by the fact that he'll always be able to find Merlin is <3

Seriously, I think I'm all heart eyes right now.

[Thank you for the lovely comments! Um, I suspect this isn't what you guys were hoping for, but oh well, on with the show!]

Part Two: Renaissance

The fog's been thick as soup for over a week when Arthur finds himself combing the dirty little port town for the fifteenth time, searching for someone who will sell him the last few items he needs to set sail and cursing fog and ports and every merchant who didn't think far enough ahead to buy that last coil of rope, that last sack of flour for when Arthur would need it. Wait for the fog to lift, that's what they all say, rubbing their hands as they think of his crew spending the last of their pitiful incomes in the taverns and whorehouses along the docks. By then we'll have new supplies.

Arthur can't wait for the fog to lift, if the blasted fog ever even does lift from this accursed inlet. Navigating an unfamiliar coast in these conditions is risky, but his partners are waiting for him in Venice, and every day he delays means more likelihood of encountering one of the ferocious winter ( ... )

Arthur stands astern and watches as the town slips slowly into the whiteness. The ship creaks gently, swaying a little as she gets under way. Up above, two of the men are having a quiet conversation in the rigging, their voices both muffled and amplified by the fog. Arthur lets himself sway with the ship, feeling the itching of his skin that he always gets on land begin to subside ( ... )

“I swear, it was right here,” says Arthur for the third time, striding a little way up the street as if somehow the old man's shop might have moved ten feet to the left. But it hasn't, it hasn't moved anywhere at all. It's just gone“Maybe it was another street, my lord,” says the mate with that diplomatic tone that they take with him when he's acting more like a duke's son than a captain. Arthur shakes his hand and slams his hand into the flaking whitewash under the strange painting of the mocking face. “Here,” he says. “It was here ( ... )

“Why do you need that to tell you where north is, anyway?” asks the peasant. “Everyone knows it's that way.” He points towards the docks, and Arthur is suddenly engulfed in a wave of irritation ( ... )
