Arthur found the notes on the second day after his father’s death. He needed to distract himself, to clear his mind. So he went into his father’s chambers and started sorting through everything in the cupboards that he could find.
His mind barely registered piles of parchment, maps and plans, but he needed to do something. It didn’t matter what everything said, for now. In that moment, he needed the tangible pieces of his father’s life there and it just hurtSo when he came upon a piece of parchment that flashed up the name of Merlin in his eyes, he felt like it was physically pulling him out of his reverie ( ... )

“Sire, I think maybe you should try to rest for a bit. In your own bed,” Gaius tried to tell him for the fifth time that night. “I will keep you updated on the progress. The Kingdom needs their king to be strong, Sire. And fully rested.”
“Not leaving,” Arthur answered tersely. “And you can’t make me, so stop trying.” His blood ran cold at the thought of leaving Merlin there… going away… while he was fighting for his life.
Leaving, like Arthur thought Merlin had done. He felt waves of guilt wash over him. He had thought Merlin had left him without a word, gone on his own, and abandoned him. He had been angry and hurt and betrayed. The things he had wanted to say to Merlin in the last months… he couldn’t believe he had been so stupid, so arrogant ( ... )

He managed to get some things done that day, but nothing made him feel good. His messenger returned with a letter from Afgar. The gist of it was ’Uther’s death changes nothing.’ He made himself worry for at least ten minutes, sending no answer back to him. In four months since Merlin’s disappearance, Camelot has changed plenty. Or was it only him that’s changed?
He made himself enter Uther’s bedchambers again that day. He paced around for a full minute before sitting at the table and going through his notes again.
It was futile trying to find the guard from Merlin’s cell, the coward had probably run, but it didn’t matter as far as information went. Uther was nothing if not organised. He had kept everything in his notes ( ... )
