Arthur/Merlin, servant!Arthur

(I actually have a bit of a plot bunny for this. It doesn't have to be used but I thought I'd add it in case anyone liked the sound of it - Uther blames Arthur for Igraine's death and refuses to officially recognise him as his son. He decides to allow him to stay in the castle as a servant but everyone knows who he is because he looks just like the Queen. The other servants stay away from him and he's basically treated like a pariah. Merlin comes to Camelot and is immediately attracted to Arthur and decides to befriend him....)

The dungeon is dark and damp and dreary and other things that start with "d," and Merlin can't help but think his first full day in Camelot is not going well. He collapses on the dirty straw (another "d," ugh) and tries to shake the ache out of his arm from where Sir Owain had tried to twist it off.

The blond bloke doesn't seem to mind the d's; he's on his feet again almost before the door closes and starts pacing, occasionally kicking at the walls and growling under his breath--not words, just sharp expressive sounds. He doesn't seem to notice that he's even more battered and bruised than Merlin is, but then again, he didn't seem to notice earlier that the knights he was facing had maces and swords and armor, and he, Blondie, had naught but a blunt shovel.

"Are you doing to sit down, you know, ever?" Merlin finally asks. "'Cause I don't think the wall's moving."

The other boy snarls at him. "Shut up. It's your fault we're in here."

"My fault--?" Merlin blurts. "Sorry, guess I should've left you to the knights, then ( ... )

Awwwww! Before BBC Merlin, I loved how King Arthur didn't grow up all noble. This is a great callback to that... besides being amazingly sweet. :DDDD

oh this is lovely, i thoroughly adore the idea of uther not wanting to have anything to do with the 'bastard child'.
also this screams for a sequel :)

Hell, I could probably do thirteen episodes' worth of sequels if I had enough time. Stupid real life, getting in the way of my fandom...

Oh, fabulous! If ever real life permits, I heartily second the call for more. This Arthur breaks my heart, and I love that in a way he does sound like "our" Arthur, except more bitter. Loved the "d"'s at the beginning, too. :o)

This is awesome. So in-character, despite the different scenario. I'd love to see more of this AU.

This was fantastic!
Poor Arthur, bitter but still with his head held high.
I'd love to read more of this AU if you ever find the time to write it.

Oh, Arthur. My heartstrings, they are tugged. I would love to see the adventures these boys would get into, if you ever take it upon yourself to continue this story.
