The semi-colon is used to separate two complete thoughts that are so connected you don't want to give them separation anxiety with a period. Example: "Johnny ran into the sliding glass door; we spent three hours picking up the pieces."
Hope that helps, and sorry for the rather disturbing example...it was what first came to mind, which says something about me.

Also, it's okay. With the economy the way it is today, they don't make glass doors and sample sentences the way they used to.
