For Joe

It had been about a week since the island had had its regularly scheduled chaos, this time in the form of flood and escaped dinosaurs. King especially, had not appreciated the dinosaur part, since he had to practically run into one to realize something was just not right around here. Thankfully, the dinosaur he'd run into had been virtually ( Read more... )

After his day on the beach with his gun, Joe had actually found himself feeling a bit better and after he'd stashed the gun in the hut that he still couldn't bring himself to sleep in, he'd continued to wander. Down toward the small waterfall this time, Ozzy at his heels, and he squinted as he approached, wondering if he'd actually finally found King. Sometime the day before he'd sort of given up actively looking for him, only because Joe was fucking exhausted, but now, here he was. Figured that that was how it worked.

"Hey," he said as he approached, lifting his hand in a slight wave as Ozzy ran excitedly around Joe's feet.

King watched as the person continued to approach, and after some careful thought, decided that this person must've been Joe. The pup running around his feet pretty much sealed it, as King recognized it from the last time he'd seen Billy.

It was weird seeing Joe like this, as they kind of never went out of their way to find each other, but it was comforting at least, to see someone familiar. Even if that someone was a shaved, pesky little version of himself. "Hey," King said in return, looking Joe over. Joe looked like he'd been hit by several trucks. "You look like shit."

Joe let out a soft snort of forced laughter and he shrugged, then nodded a little, reaching up to rub the back of his neck. "Yeah, well, I feel like shit, so I guess it's pretty fucking appropriate that I look like shit, too." More than appropriate, really.

And suddenly Joe didn't want to do this. He wanted to turn around, go back to Dale's or Logan's and burrow into a bed and sleep for a week, Ozzy at his back. He wanted to let King find out on his own, because he was so fucking tired of being the bearer of bad news rather than just being allowed to mourn. Fuck everyone else, Joe wanted this time to himself.

But he knew he couldn't do that.

"That's usually the case, yeah," King said, still watching Joe. King felt like shit too, and probably looked it, though he hadn't really looked in the mirror lately to find out. Joe on the other hand, in addition to looking like shit, looked extremely uncomfortable as well. Like he had something to say, but couldn't quite get it out. "Something happened," King said, deciding to help Joe cut to the chase despite the growing knot of unease in his stomach. There was really only one thing that could've bothered King right now, and he had a feeling he was about to hear it.
