Facebook...  who knew that it was capable of a second and even a third Golden Age?  Seems that with the "new" app for the iPhone that everyone is getting into using it as a primary way of getting their Web v2.0 on.  And me?  Well, I agree.  The iPhone app makes Facebook worth doing for the most part.  You can do all the fun stuff (commenting on ( Read more... )

I had FB going for about two months last year - lately I've been thinking of reactivating my account, now that I have a so-called 'smart phone'.
Still, I've been hesitant to start it up again for all the reasons you've mentioned. It all seems so time-consuming, anyway.. I can't have FB cutting into my LJ time, now!

When someone I don't think I've met or know well requests to be added, I just write them back and say...

Hi,

Do we know each other? I use facebook f-list for real life friends and more long-lasting online acquaintances.

Please advise,

Paul

I find that they either don't respond, or apologize for intruding, or tell me story about how we know each other.... either way, it puts the ball back in their court, and I can ignore them if they don't respond in a day or two.

The only problem with that is once you respond, they can then see your facebook profile page, and friends (for 30 days). I have to simply ignore and hope they will send a message in the first place telling me where they know me from.

I don't restrict my profile, so that's not a problem for me. :)

amen, brotha. i just joined FB for the first time like a month ago and i already have 5 of those same types of requests sitting in my account. but vinny just showed me a way to set friend groups so that people in that group basically can't see shit (you can customize what they can and can't see), and their shit won't show up in your compiled listings either. it makes it completely painless. that being said, i have given myself permission to "ignore" lots of people, especially those high schoolers you describe...they don't get a notice or anything that says you ignored them...it just does nothing. i think i even did it for an uncle of mine that's kind of a douche. oops! (but not really)

Also, you can delete them from your friends list and they won't be notified. And if you set it so they can't see your friends list anyway (like I do with random coworkers I've spoken to once), they'll never know.
