OK, I've got two spare things that may greatly help you out, and you're welcome to them at no charge: an Onkyo TX-SR800 receiver, and a Samsung upconverting DVD player. Although this isn't the absolute best solution, it's pretty darned good.

Basically it goes something like this:

Video connections
Cable box -> HDMI cable -> TV
Samsung DVD -> DVI to HDMI conversion cable -> TV
Cable box -> S-Video cable -> TiVo
TiVo -> S-Video cable -> Onkyo amp
PS2 -> Component video cables -> Onkyo amp
Wii -> Component video cables -> Onkyo amp
Onkyo amp -> Component video cables -> TV

Audio connectionsCable box -> Optical audio cable -> Onkyo amp
