Something New - Brian's Fav Fridays

Apr 06, 2007 13:59

So I'm gonna try a little experiment, something new. Each Friday (as life permits) I'm going to pimp something on my Fav's list. It might be a TV show, book, movie, artist, work of art, album, concert - you get the idea. As a total pop culture geek, obsessed with our referential way of life and finding things that "don't suck" I'm gonna share ( Read more... )

I love R.E.M.. I think my favorite albums would have to be Green and Monster. I started drifting away during New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

I would like to see them in concert since I never have. Hopefully they will do a tour soon.

"Document" was actually their last new (original) album on I.R.S., not counting "eponymous" which came out on I.R.S. in the fall of '88 almost simultaneously as "Green ( ... )

re: IRS - D'oh! you think I would have noticed that with the photo I used (it says IRS on it - hehe).

re: fan - yeah, it's surprising to see just how much an effect Bill's leaving had on the group. I've heard the John Lenin cover they did (with Berry) for a new comp that's out is quite good.

re: Vedder and PJ - I was a HUGE PJ fan in '91 and having seen them live 3 times will say again and again that they are awesome. I don't really keep up with them much these days but I think Vedder is pretty darn cool. To compare them to Hootie pretty much tells me that you and I won't ever agree on the merit of PJ's work. I was wishing that Michael would have given up more of the song to Eddie or that they would have played up the harmonies more actually.

That's one of the things I love about music! We both love R.E.M. but don't see Pearl Jam the same.

What I find interesting is that the things that people who hate Michael Stipe for, the pretentiousness, the over seriousness (at times), etc. are all same things that make me not like Vedder.

Different Strokes for different folks :-)

re: Jane's - totally... The first 3 Jane's albums were total staples in my collection when I was a junior/senior in high school. Them and Social Distortion's first few albums. I seriously remember thinking to myself - ok, I can like Jane's and Social D. on top of REM and U2 but that's it... that's all the music I'll listen to... not the best plan and it was quickly dropped as I started to open myself to more and more kinds of music.

Back in...what was it? '84?...a buddy of mine turned me on to this new group late one night at the NCO Club in Stuttgart, Germany, by playing "So. Central Rain" on the jukebox. The flipside was a drunken version of "King of the Road" that we gladly sang along with. i was hooked and have stuck with them ever since. Once Bill Berry left the group, they really lost their way. The song "Bad Day" on their WB hits package was a sign of hope, but "Behind the Sun" was a slide backwards. i wish they would get a fucking drummer once and for all. Their induction at the HoF was fantastic and Eddie was amazing. All the things i would have said myself.

I love that "Bad Day" song as well. Document and Life's Rich Pageant are my big favs. I love the track "Superman" and "Begin the Begin".

Brian, You hit the nail on the head with this one. I played the shit out of my Document cassette. It is still my favorite R.E.M. album. The band was at their best long before "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People". Their last album, "Around the Sun" failed to captivate me. Looking forward to the new album.
