I can understand lauren feeling unhappy. Arts students get this quite regularly and, whether serious or not it can be quite hurtful, especially during exams when they're working their guts out.

One of the most offensive things anyone has ever said to me was that it was "a waste" that someone who was bright and reasonably scientifically gifted should chose to study an arts subject, since these are not as rigorous or useful to sociey. This sort of thing is bollocks, but the bias is everywhere: back in school I was channeled into science subjects by the teachers because that's what the intelligent ones are supposed to study. As a result I ended up giving up English for A level, despite it being my strongest subject and had a much harder time both of A levels and university applications as a result.

Basically this is a sensitive subject for many, plus we've heard all the jibes before. Speaking of which, I hear compscis lack social skills and rarely wash or see sunlight :-P.

Probably a bad example, what with that being true and all... ;-)

I think I'd put it down to people who are quite stressed trying to point out why they are the most stressed/challenged/hard-working people in the world (as people do).

And of course occasionally inserting the words "thus", "hence" and "obviously" between all the maths is really easy, hence writing text is the easy bit, so obviously writing essays is bound to be sooo easy ;). It might also have to do with not having a particularly good idea of what students in other subjects actually do.
