I somewhat agree with this view. However, I don't think something has to be shocking to mean something. Art comes, or should come, from the artist. It shouldn't be about giving the viewer what they want, whether what they want is safe and marketable, or shocking and though-provoking. It should simply be about what the artist wants to create. A revolution with no cause wouldn't be a revolution. I feel that while there are too many clones and little meaning these days, there also seems to be a culture in which people just want to fight, even if they don't know what it is they're fighting against. I don't think there is anyone to stand up and fight against, at least not in any way that the fight could be won. The fight is within ourselves, we are the enemy in so many ways. Some aspects of the mainstream are good, even deep, just as some of the underground culture is shitty and shallow. Being underground doesn't make it deep, important or even interesting ( ... )

agreed.
I think everything is so available to us and the world that we feel like we should know what that thing is that we search for, the thing that hasn't been done or will make a difference.. but we won't know until it comes and then it has to be released.
It's hard in such a commercialized society to not be influenced but we take our imaginations too seriously and scrutinize ourself through trendy regulations but that's what holds it all back!
