After much reading up on it over the past couple of months, I'm firmly in favor of anti-aging research. But I haven't shouted about it anywhere but here. Why don't you consider research into treating or curing diseases like cancer and heart disease the same thing as longevity research? Is the theory with anti-aging treatments that somehow it would make people immune? But even children die of these diseases, and if you want to be a utilitarian about it then isn't saving 80 years of a 5 year old child's life worth more than giving 5 more years to an 80 year old?

Yes, sure, "por que no los dos" - I feel the same way, actually, I'm just playing devil's advocate so you can think about how to make the case if you ever do bring it to Facebook or other audiences.

Personally I think tackling air pollution (= heart disease) and unhealthy lifestyles (= cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc etc) is probably just as worthwhile to invest money in if the end goal is to improve the quality and length of life for as many humans as possible.

I don't think there's a clear line between longevity research and treatments that target diseases that are far more common in old age. Ultimately most medicine aims to give us a longer healthier life ( ... )
