I had that problem with my laptop. Finally figured out that I was accidentally touching the touch pad with my left thumb. Made the cursor jump and put my text somewhere entirely different. I really wasn't aware of being anywhere near that touch pad. (Dammit, it just happened again!) So it might not be a problem with your laptop. Could be operator error, just like mine.

I use a USB mini-mouse, because I hate the touch pad and that little pencil eraser gizmo (disabled that little monster!)
