Character Name: Julian "Hellion" Keller
Canon source: Marvel 616

Personality: Julian is the picture-perfect example of a rich, arrogant bad-boy gone "good."

At first, he is introduced as the stereotypical "blue blood" of his class, and goes about espousing many of the same politics and ideologies other similar characters -- such as Monet before him, or Quentin Quire after -- have in the past. Unlike Monet or Quentin, however, Julian takes a more "Magneto-esque" approach to things rather than just acting like a spoiled brat -- he believes Homo Superior to be just that: superior, and reacts with both derision and casual malice to anyone who disagrees with this fact. He believes that rules are there only when they suit him, and uses his charm and natural charisma to try and get out of trouble whenever it crops up; he is a "Hellion" in both name and action, doing what he wants whenever he can get away with it, never apologizing or taking blame until the worst of the worst transpires. He is a natural-born leader -- both because he chooses to be and is elected to lead his own team -- headstrong, confident, and very rarely backs down when others challenge what he believes is right. His ego is a mile-wide -- and growing -- and he initially introduces himself as one of the most powerful mutants on the planet.

In short, if Emma Frost hadn't taken a shine to him early on, he very well could have become another ideological clone of Magneto, all huff, conviction, and brashness without any of the reasons why.

Julian does somewhat mature, however, as the series goes on...but much of his growth is stymied by both Emma Frost -- who both supports and encourages his behavior -- and his own over-inflated sense of importance. Because of how powerful he is, he is rarely -- if ever -- taken down a notch or challenged on a physical level when things come to a head, causing him to be cocky and reckless. He takes entirely too much responsibility onto himself when he shouldn't, and believes that only his teammates and himself should take care of one another, that relying on the faculty or anyone else is a sign of weakness that would mar his near-perfect track record.

This attitude stems from one of Julian's biggest subconscious flaws: because of how successful his normal, human older brother is, Julian feels he has to work twice as hard to upstage him; in other words, he has an inferiority complex. This means that, to Julian, just being good isn't good enough -- he has to be the best; he has to make others believe he is better than them, or else he won't feel that way. Self-image and superiority are a big part of who Julian is, who he wants to be.

When the boy fails, he fails hard.

It's only when the events of M-day have come and gone that we see Julian begin to open up a bit more and act like less of a douchebag. Here, after losing both his best friend and first love, we afforded the chance to see Julian as he really is: a child in a world he doesn't quite understand, who blames himself for things out of his control and ping-pongs back and forth from being fatalistic, angry, uncaring, and, ultimately, concerned about where the future is heading. It is here that Emma Frost's first assumption about the boy -- that he has great capacity for both evil and good -- is shown the most, as, in turn, he saves lives, almost kills to defend his friends, tries to start a riot, and ultimately ends up losing his hands in a failing battle to save the entire mutant race.

That is Julian in a nutshell: a teenager willing to do what has to be done to protect his friends, both headstrong and capable of being both savior and destroyer. With ego.

History: Here! He's coming in JUST as the Nimrod are attacking.

Strengths: Telekinesis: Hellion, classified as a first-class telekinetic before the blocks on his mind were unlocked, is able to move solid matter with a thought. He can use this to various effects. He is able to fly, create small kinetic shields, unleash powerful blasts of telekinetic force and manipulate objects from a distance. When Emma unlocked subconscious blocks on his power, Hellion was able to reach a flight speed of at least twice the speed of sound, but was severely injured from the physical strain afterward. Recovering, it appears that while his power levels have come down from Frost's manipulation, they have stabilized at a higher level than before, and he is having trouble focusing his abilities e.g. blowing holes in the floor while picking up a paper clip, knocking Rockslide through a wall. His forcefields can withstand the friction and wind pressure of moving at speeds beyond the speed of sound and survive fighting Nimrod. He also jettisoned Kimura through a building and 27.3 miles away when rescuing his teammate Mercury.

Weaknesses: Aside from having all the normal weakness of a human, Julian relies on his hands to "control" his telekinesis and has trouble with finer, less powerful movements now that his power level has been increased.

Preferred drop-in point: Anywhere!

What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? I want to see how Julian would act in a setting that's basically even worse than what he's had to deal with back home. He's always been the type to be a leader, so maybe he can actually do some good and grow up, here.

First Person Journal Sample:

[ Voice; ]
Oh, so that's what it feels like to pop your "kidnapped into another dimension" cherry. Lame.

--Can't say that I'm all that impressed. Most bad guys are a bit more original -- I mean, come on: at this point it's basically a running gag. Overdone. Everything seems okay for a while, then some crazy effing thing feels like messing with us and takes out the most "capable" X-men first. It's so damn predictable -- and then, the one person left who isn't fucking inept puts a ragtag team together to save the charity cases that got rolled over in the first place.

[ A put-upon sigh. ]

It never fails. This is just the latest crap Homo Sapiens have thrown our way to clean up -- and we will end up being these loser's janitors, mark my words. The X-men can't leave well enough alone even when the entire race is about to go extinct.

So.

[ A brief pause. ]

The cavalry's here, guys. There's no need to shit your pants.

Third Person Sample:
He was tired of being cornered, tired of being the one that had to be saved, or had to do the saving because of others failures. He was tired of his friends dying, of people like Brian and Cessily being targeted by bigots and closed-minded idiots just because they were different, because they were better than the flatscans and they just couldn't take it. It was unfair, unjust; they were given these gifts, these powers to be more than the world around them, to be greater than their base DNA dictated, and here they were, lining up for the slaughter. For their own extinction, playing right into their enemies hands.

"What I don't get," he says, plainly, for everyone within earshot of where he's sitting in Utopia's makeshift cafeteria to listen. "Is why we we're staying." a beat to chew, and he knows more than just his table is listening. "It's basically a big fuck you to Osborn and his administration."

Which was true, but also not. Osborn was more preoccupied with heroes than the X-men; it was the Anti-Mutant leagues they had to watch out for. "And that's saying something, from a group of people he could just nuke to death whenever he felt like it."

It didn't make sense; Cyclops and Ms. Frost didn't make sense, and the rest of the instructors less so. They told them to not make a ruckus, to not stir the waters, but then did so anyway, and in the most public way possible. They were working with the Brotherhood, Ms. Frost had been working for Osborn; Wolverine and Laura kept disappearing and reappearing, the both of them obviously still part of the team that had saved him from the Leper Queen. It was almost as if they were waiting for some great battle to happen, like they were advocating peace with one hand while readying the troops with the other, but only in secret. And no one was explaining why.

Did they really think their race so weak?

Did they not care if everyone survived anymore?

Did Magneto think it?

Julian understood enough about the situation to know of all of the dangers; hell, he'd been one of the people to see Hope when she was a baby, so he knew all about the dangers of the game they were playing. If the mutant race seemed too willing to fight, then they'd be perceived as a threat, and wiped out; if they appeared too cowed, like they were during the Skrull attack, then their best and brightest would be targeted and moved off the board. It was just basic strategy, politic.

"It's for our own good, Julian."

He shook his head, fighting down his anger, his frustration at having the same argument day in and day out, no matter who he spoke to. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure people during the Holocaust thought the same thing." he stated, flatly, rolling his eyes. "We're sheep being herded. And the teachers have to know it, too."

Utopia was more of a prison cell than a paradise, an executioner's guillotine disguised as a military installation. They had some of the strongest minds and powers, some of the best people and technology available to the world at large, and...what of it? They haunted California's coastline like a drowning shipwreck, fighting off whatever threats came to them from within or without without actually solving their problems.

Why were they still in US waters?

Why were they still on the planet?

What did Cyclops and the rest think they owed Homo Sapiens?

"Yeah, it's all just one big conspiracy, isn't i--"

He slammed his hands against the table, his eyes glowing emerald. "Wake up, newbies!" and he's so angry, so filled with -- with a need to get out, to find to answers, to knock sense into everyone so thoroughly okay with the situation. "Wake up! We're not safe here, and you're dead wrong if you think your mommies and daddies in the X-men are gonna save you!"

All eyes on him.

"For the longest time, we've only had to rely on ourselves." he begins, turning to get a good look at everyone. "We've been the outcasts, the unwanted; we've been part of a dying race that no one's ever given two shits about." He's levitating, now, and the anger inside of him is rising, is fueling the fire he hopes to ignite in everyone around him. "We've been beaten and killed, kidnapped and experimented on, and they just expect us to roll over and die; to let Homo Sapiens wipe us off the face of the earth after we almost equaled them in number."

When he lands on the table before him, he can tell some of the older men and women are watching him, too. "They're afraid of us." he continues, turning around again. "And I say that they should be. That we should let them be. We're the next step in evolution, and they've got us cornered here because they don't know how to deal."

Somewhere, distantly, he feels the ground shake. The explosion that follows nearly shakes him off of his feet.

"--Fuck them," he snarls, once he's steadied himself. "If they want a war, then that's what we should give them."

When the Nimrod Sentinel's attack, he's the first one out the door and flying.

His last thought, before adrenaline and survival instinct kick in, is that he doesn't want his death to be in vain.
