What would you recommend as an introductory book for a 50ish geek who's been away from science fiction for a while. He's particularly interested in Steampunk.
I'm going to STRONGLY recommend Whitechapel Gods by S. M. Peters if he wouldn't be offended by fantasy mixed with his steampunk. If he wants it straight up, yeah, Difference Engine kinda defines the genre. He might also want to take a look at Jay Lake's trilogy starting with Mainspring, which I'm just starting but loving to pieces... again, not entirely straight steampunk, but I don't know how to explain it quickly. :)
