more Dick Francis

Here's the latest news from Operation Lie In Bed a Lot and Read All the Dick Francis. I'm still feeling a bit under the weather--not actually ill but very tired, and emotionally a bit low--so lying down + light fiction has enormous appeal.

I'd completely forgotten about 'The Edge' -though I expect that I have a copy somewhere. I've just been comfort-reading 'Reflex' - one of my favourite go-to Francis's as it has rather less bloody violence than usual and the photographic puzzles are fascinating.

I hope you feel better soon *hugs* and in the meantime get all the opportunities for the lying down & light fiction you feel like.

'The Edge' is the only Dick Francis I ever tried to read in the past, and I never managed it past the first few pages. I think I'd picked it up because it sounded a bit like an Agatha Christie in set-up and of course they're very different. Might take another crack at it now.

Generally speaking Francis seems to write female characters incredibly well, all things considered. I was pleased with the ones in 'Bonecrack' which I have now finished (oh yes, very tempted to put Alessandro and Neil on my Yuletide list this year. I feel Neil has even more to teach Alessandro about life, heh). On 'Rat Race' now and want to get hold of the first Sid & Chico book, although I see the value in reading them chronologically in publication order as you are - thanks for the reviews, so useful. I note that 'Rat Race' is the earliest one I've read so far so it'll be interesting to contrast the style/development.

Huh; I don't remember Comeback although I'm sure I read it. Of these, the only one that's a sure favorite is Straight and that's partly because I love the jewelry design and semi-precious jewels dealing mulligan; often the profession of non-racing protagonists are my favorite aspect of Francis's works.

If I ever break down and get Dick Francis books for my tablet, the first one I'll get is Nerve; have you read it yet?

Julia, some of his works are the slashiest things this side of slash fic, but Nerve has a different few kinks.
