I seem to recall James Peterson as a sensible baking author who explains why things are done. Hmmm, I think several of the Bittman books also have baking chapters. And since you always have yogurt around, I'd recommend the Smitten Kitchen yogurt cake as a good plain cake that is easy to customize and experiment with. I usually use part semolina for the flour and bake it in an 8 x 8 pan, which makes nice pieces that can be wrapped for work lunches.

I didn't know James Peterson had written a baking book! I like his other books very much (though some are too professionally-oriented to be useful to me) so I'll see if I can get hold of a copy. Thanks!

Hello! *waves* *g*

Bake Off is SO GOOD. I am glad you have been lured into it's glory. I loved this past week's episode - I would never have thought baguette would be so challenging (to a competent group of bakers, I mean - I would be challenged by it, but of all the things I'd think that group people would struggle with, that would not be it). Paul Hollywood's sapphire-blue eyes control us all (Mary has deep blue eyes too, in fact I think there was a Yuletide request last year suggesting that he was her long-lost son, which was quite fun). There was a Bake Off/Jane Austen crossover, I think, which was fun

(In fact, this: The Great Uppercross Bake Off (1887 words) by Ankaret
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, Paul Hollywood, Mary Berry, Mary Musgrove, Charles Musgrove, Sir Walter Elliot, William Elliot (Persuasion - Jane Austen), Louisa Musgrove, Henrietta Musgrove, Penelope Clay, Frederick Wentworth, Anne Elliot, Lady Russell, Captain Benwick

It hadn't even occurred to me that there would be Bake Off fanfic, but I should have known. (I will confess that I have had shippy feelings about Paul Hollywood and the occasional male contestant. And I wouldn't mind fic about Paul and Mary getting drunk together and gossiping and perhaps disastrously attempting to bake something.)

Yay for the prospects of more Haddock fic!

I only wish you all lived close enough that I could invite you over to help me eat all the cakes, etc. I'd like to bake.

Ha, I wished that too, because your food posts always makes my mouth water... Could it be an option to donate cakes to local shelters or soup kitchens or something?

My intermittent Tintin re-reading has reminded me how much I love Haddock. He's the best (well, except when he's the worst, but I love him anyway.)
