*gleefully claims the internet and all its cookies* Thank you! I'm so glad this worked for you. Even though these are ideas, even specific scenarios, we've talked about, it can be surprisingly challenging to translate that into a story that works as a story ( ... )

Well absolutely, and that's partly why I'm still bouncing up and down over this gorgeous, gorgeous fic, because I was sold on the underpinning ideas but having them *flow* and, as I've said, weave together in themes and images and be so elegantly, perfectly expressed and be words from their mouths and thoughts in their heads that just sound like them, that's a whole other level of wonderful. It's like, I knew they were something like this but I hadn't realised how much I wanted to see precisely what they are, what they do, what they feel, and with such a subtle and complicated dynamic, conveying it with such understated power as you have here is a real achievement - how to have them feel so deeply and yet so silently, that's no easy thing ( ... )

Dick and Pat can feel in themselves and each other the potential to truly control and dominate, and are even (mostly subconsciously) aware of how horribly they could manipulate each other, if they chose to

*nods* For example, on some level I think Dick knows that if he insisted on a non-monogamous relationship, Pat would give in. But he also knows, instinctively, that although Pat would pretend to be fine with it (because Pat is both too generous and too proud/reserved to show jealousy), it would eat away at Pat's self-esteem, at his trust, at all the foundations of their relationship. And so he never asks for the kind of relationship he's used to and which would be most comfortable for him. Similarly, Pat refrains from trying to remake Dick in his own image (in terms of e.g. an overactive work ethic, a distrust of frivolous things like holidays and parties especially queer parties, etc.), even though he knows on some level that Dick idolizes him and has changed for him and would break his own heart to be/do anything he thought Pat ( ... )
