There's a lot of Eighth Doctor stuff being made by Big Finish, which has a license from the BBC. I assume that if there's a costume change the impetus is coming from BF, but the BBC owns the rights to the character and would have to approve it, so it's their responsibility.
It still seems odd. They're audios and surely people expect the character to look as he did in the film. Which I still haven't seen; I must do that. And who cares if it looks old-fashioned? Looking odd is what the Doctor does. Why would they want him to dress like Harry?
That's still weird, though. If it's audio, the only time people are going to see the costume anyway is on the cover, and that's so easy to ignore. I'd think you'd just end up imagining him in his waistcoat like always.
It's so weird. One of the things I love about Eleven is that he's not part of the "the Doctor must be COOL" mindset that was dominant during Nine and Ten's eras; I don't understand imposing that on the Eighth Doctor.
Calm down...

It says "for future promotional purposes" not for *all* future promotional purposes. He's not going to look like this on the DVD cover or anything. And the article also says that it has the "blessing of the BBC", not that the BBC are doing it. (Of course, that implies they could stop it if they wanted to.)
My guess is this is Big Finish, who are probably tired of using the same two dozen publicity photos for Eighth Doctor stories.
And let's face it, the Eighth Doctor has more in common with the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh than he does the First through Seventh. Remember all those dark and terrible things that the Doctor has endured? The death of his friends and family? The locking away of Gallifrey? The whole Time War thing? Eighth Doctor.
This is most likely meant to show him near the end of his life and could transition pretty well into the Ninth Doctor.
And I, for one, will welcome anything that would make it easier for the Eighth Doctor to return to our television screens.

As the BBC owns the rights to the character, it amounts to the same thing.

So "blowing up Gallifrey" = "can't wear velvet"? That's an interesting logic. I don't know if you're read the Eighth Doctor Adventures novels, but Eight was dark, genocidal, and traumatized before Nine was even a gleam in Russell T. Davies's eye, and he did it in a pretty velvet coat.
Also: why would it be "easier for the Eighth Doctor to return to our television screens" if he's dressed differently?
And finally, would you have been quite so patronizing if your comment hadn't been anonymous?

*nods* And if Big Finish think they're going to get people who've never before been Eighth Doctor fans to start buying audios (audios, of all things) because of a new outfit, they're deluded. I don't mean that as a slap at BF--I like BF--but Paul McGann in a shiny coat isn't going to draw in the teen audience that swooned over David Tennant.

I can believe that, but hardly think that it's justification for quite how ugly and frankly un-eighth this new look is.
