I choose to believe that Odo's brief stint as a solid may've given him some more weirdly human tendencies, such as much human-like sexual desires/understandings of it. At least that's the way I explain that to myself, though it'd've been nice if they'd mentioned it at all in the episode.

That makes sense. Plus he was raised by humanoids, so there's the cultural and psychological influence.

The reveal did make me roll my eyes a bit, because it takes a complex, enigmatic emotional situation and reduces it to something fairly banal.

It is a bit cliche, it's true, but in this particular instance, I seem to remember thinking it went a bit beyond banality into some moderately interesting character territory. I may be somewhat biased though, as I have lately come to realize that the gen, parent-child equivalent of UST is a huge story kink of mine, much more so than slash. :)

Ha! Yes. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way about Earl Grey. :)

He and Bill Adama from Battlestar Galactica should have a beer together sometime.

*nods* I'm pretty much the opposite; I don't hate parent-child stories or anything, but I'm not all that into them.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way about Earl Grey.

I don't mind it as a tea, although it's not my favorite, but I hate it as a fanfic cliché!

And someday I hope to block "A Simple Investigation" out of my memory as well. Perhaps one of the cast's frequent trips to the mirrorverse will shift reality just enough so that none of it ever happened . . .

Ordinary parent-child relationships don't do it for me, either. It's always the messed-up, thwarted, socially problematic ones. (Especially if they're not actually genetic relationships, apparently, but that may not be a necessary detail. Why my brain fixates on stuff like that, I'll never know. :)

I haven't seen it that much as a fanfic cliche, but I've never cared for it as a tea, nor been able to figure out why so many characters seem keen on it. :)

Have you read John Le Carré? Some of his male characters have massively screwed-up relationships with their parents. I'd recommend The Naive and Sentimental Lover, Absolute Friends, and The Perfect Spy in that respect. But it is very manpainy and Le Carré has yet to write a believable female character in any of his books I've read.

As for Earl Grey, so many characters are keen on it because it's the only tea that non-tea-drinking writers can name!

That makes sense. And of course he is lonely in his exile; it's natural that he'd want the company of another Cardassian. I'm just hoping very hard that it doesn't turn into a romance. Garak is the last remaining character with no canonical romance, and since any canonical romance will be het, I'm really hoping he stays unattached.

Your icon is hypnotic, by the way. I just keep staring at them as they stare googly-eyed at each other.

You know, I've never thought of it in just those terms, but it makes a lot of sense.

One moment that particularly sticks in my memory is Tain telling the story about ickle!Garak and then saying "I was very proud of you that day." That's a poisoned compliment if ever there was. One day, one single day, when Tain was proud of his son, and Garak was five years old at the time. *hugs poor Garak*

I adore a line that preceeds that:

Tain: Do you remember that day in the country?

Garak: How could I forget? It was the only day.

"It was the only day..." Wow. I just can't get over the awesomeness of that line; there's so much there.

I'm really enjoying reading these, btw. Just have to watch myself that I don't leak anything.
