Hee! I think Garak's line about how clearly he was spying for the wrong intelligence service may be my favorite line of his, ever. Well, OK, one of my favorite lines of his. :)

Yes, that's a great line. It was such fun seeing Garak as the world-weary, cynical, John Le Carré style spy confronted with Bashir's shiny James Bond fantasy.

I remember DS9 really baffling me sometimes. As a slasher, I'm used to "inventing moments" for the ships of my choice and flailing happily over hand touching or lingering looks or what have you, knowing fullwell that I'm making it all up, or if it's intentional it's done on the part of the actors and wasn't written into the script that way. (There are, of course, exceptions.) DS9 though, seemed to frequently have these lines and moments that had to be deliberately written ambiguously, and then played toward the ship, and yet . . . never quite crosses the line. I was just never sure what to make of it all! It made me happy a lot, but also . . . confused in a way that shippy moments in other shows don't.

In a comment on DW I said that one could easily imagine a Torchwood-style sexual tangle taking place under the surface of DS9. I mean, even if you just look at what's definitely canon . . . Bashir has a thing for Dax and fancies Kira at least a little, and Kira fancies him back; Dax fancies Sisko a little (and what interesting possibilities that raises!) and also likes Bashir's flirting; Odo loves Kira and heaven knows what sharing Curzon Dax's memories did to his feelings about Jadzia Dax, etc.

AHahahaaha, you're totally right. (Or the person on DW is.) Which does remind me of the Sisko/Dax thing. I kind of shipped them too. I'll say one thing for DS9, it really had me shipping things I don't normally ship. Sisko/Dax, Dax/Kira, Odo/Quark, etc. Which isn't to say I wasn't shipping O'Brien/Bashir or Garak/Bashir, etc., but they weren't the only ones. Or, sometimes, even the main ones.

I wouldn't have wanted to see DS9 decend into a Relationship of the Week sort of show, but it certainly would've been nice to see some of that explored more. (Or, in some cases, at all.)

Hmmm, I think I go the opposite way on that one. In an ideal world, where Garak/Bashir would have as much chance of becoming canon as Sisko/Dax, I'd agree. But as things stand, I'm happy that there aren't many canon het relationships among the main cast, because it means that same-sex subtext isn't made less valid than m/f subtext.

It's great fun. Also, Bashir looks even prettier than usual in a tuxedo.
