Ironically, I found I vastly prefer Sarah Jane with Three than with Four. I felt she actually had a personality and character with Pertwee and very shortly after Four she lost it all to be the "What is it, Doctor?" starry-eyed companion of boredomsville. Fortunately, some of that is tempered by Harry, who is delightful. To me, Sarah after Harry leaves is some of the most painful Who to watch out there. (YMMV and many people find some of the Four+Sarah solo serials the bestestestest ever. I am not one

I just watched the first episode of "Robot," because I wanted to see the rest of the transition. And I think I may already have fallen in love with the Fourth Doctor, when he started skipping rope with Harry Sullivan. Silliness from the Doctor (even crafty silliness, since Harry ends up stuffed into a locker) will always win my heart.
I'm not sure how much the lack of slashiness will end up being a problem for me. A fair bit, probably. As unexpectedly fond of the Three/Jo dynamic as I was, I always loved seeing the Master turn up for a bit of flirting and snarking. And, while I can enjoy a show that's not slashy, I'm seldom fannish about one.
I do love Harry, and I'm the sort who can slash Four with all his companions (and most of his guest stars), but there's not a lot of Four/Harry out there. And, like I said, not a lot of Harry at all, really. Even UNIT gets downgraded, sadly. I do think you'll like Four. He IS likable. And I think you could even warm to Four/Harry if you wanted. But, yes. Even if it's not slashy it's enjoyable. It's good to know Four's canon even if you're not actively fannish about Four. I love him, and I love Leela and Adric, etc., but I really don't read/write fic about him.
I think the thing I noticed with Four is that he's actually quite sinister. The first time around, as a kid, I remember him being jolly and funny and a bit of a joker, but on later rewatches, I was surprised at how dark his run was. And there's a really good run of stories coming, too. Some clunkers, but some really scary, smart stuff.
and an unforgivably boring episode-long chase scene.
i will admit to love for three and his inevitable random chase scenes involving improbably cool vehicles. although, yes, when they stretch out over a whole episode even i am like, "ALL RIGHT ALREADY."
On the positive side, the "death" scene was beautifully done, with a lot of restrained emotion.
i love it so much! i love how it was three weeks for sarah and the brig, but only a few hours at most for the doctor (maybe only a few minutes); and i love how he was right in the middle of saying something important and meaningful to sarah when he suddenly dies.
re: yates: i have long thought that he had, at the very least, a crush on the doctor, and most likely was a bit in love with him. that awed kind of love you get for someone who you admire deeply. i saw planet of the spiders before i saw invasion of the dinosaurs, and before i saw IotD i read the novelisation, and i think it comes across as quite clear that yates does what he does in that story because he is trying to be like the

i have tried to come up with fic premises that would make it not completely blatantly about Their Love, but have so far failed. woe. maybe i'll be able to get a bit of into my version of "the final game", complete with six parts and cliffhangers and sarah jane cooperating with the master, who breaks the laws of time to save the doctor's life. whenever i actually get round to writing that. *kicks epic handy/jackie fic* *then kicks less epic handy/ten fic*

The flying machine got me all "OMG STEAMPUNK!" But then the scene just went on, and on, and on, and on.
I like your Yates fanon very very much. There should be fic. Hint, hint.
