Consequences Unexpected
Illness unexpected: watching her waste away before my eyes, loving her but unable to comfort her as I know I should. Obsession unexpected: taking me away from her when she needs me most. Death unexpected: making me mad for the loss of her. Astonishment unexpected: a computer-hacking MIT dropout solves the Ancients' puzzle, jealous scorn, envy. Attack unexpected: sends us fleeing Icarus to the ninth chevron address, excitement. Destiny unexpected: the place where my destiny unfolds. Consequences unexpected.
Anger expected: locked away, my loss of control a momentary satisfaction and my only company. Disappointment expected: resolve to earn the Colonel's respect again no matter however secretly he desires that very same loss of control. Alone expected: surrounded by eighty conflicted individuals who would kill for a chance to get home. Sex expected: sweaty, lust, desirable, sensuous, affectionate encyclopedic reading. Love unexpected: across the universe my new-found family sees me through burnt out eyes, guiding me. Consequences unexpected.
Desire unexpected: why does she haunt me so, her smile lighting my thoughts ablaze, striping me bare, exposing my soul. Affair unexpected: passion returned, reckless infatuation, ardent coupling, smothered moans and soft whispers, careless frenzied quickening, infidelity, guilt. Ninth chevron unexpected: anger, safety of crew, stones make shadows of distant lost home, betrayal, divorce, distrust, indecision, suffocation. Aliens unexpected: blue, Rush reborn, fight scared, obelisk, powerful, curious, last of species, drones, cold logic, dangerous. Descendants unexpected: love returned, children, community, disease, crew is family, TJ is home. Consequences unexpected.
Challenge expected: prove myself, confidence, stay with goal, learn. Intimacy unexpected: why do I care for him so, this is more than a wistful tryst, his eyes speak of buried torment, his lips caress with fevered yearning, his body aroused and virile thickens within mine, powerful, frantic, sated. Skills unexpected: leadership in the face of tiny alien dust mites, garden variety herbal medicine, bandage wash and recycling queen, clothes tailoring like my father taught me, video surgery and kidney transplants. Carmen unexpected: anemic, tired, pregnant, he'll find out eventually, sunshine, real food, forced return, surprise, unanticipated excitement, gunshots, blackness and light, Caine, left behind, safe, NO! Varro unexpected: enemy, dangerous, wounded, surgery, protective, tragedy and loss, leader, smiling eyes, tentative affection, wistful, concern, friend or lover? Future unexpected: Novus, Steven, smiling Young, rekindled love, Sara, weakness, ALS, tender care, death, frightened, five years, cure lost, Ancient database, drones, desperation, stasis pods, Varro or Young? Consequences unexpected.
Destiny expected: cold, deep, empty, blackness. Destiny expected: Builders' arrival, not human descendants. Destiny expected: regular maintenance, not choked off CO2 scrubbers, damaged shuttles, failing shields, running space battles, drones. Destiny expected: M class red dwarf suns for fiery refueling, not class O blue giants. Destiny expected: perfectly timed FTL jumps. Destiny unexpected: curious humans swarming her corridors, removing parasites from her hull, protecting her, three uploaded intelligences, nesting humans inside her stasis pods waiting for a safer future. Consequences unexpected.
