Dale Volker stood at a Gate Room console fidgeting and mumbling to himself. Lines crease his forehead and his hands move incessantly over the dials and switches, anxiously shifting his weight over his feet in a constant swaying motion.
“Let it go, Dr Volker,” Young said quietly. “You did everything you could to protect Dr Park. It wasn't your fault that Simeon took her.”
Dale listened, momentarily ceasing his motions across the station. “I should have been able to do something. Made him take me instead.”
Colonel Young sat halfway up the gracefully arching stairway in the Gate Room, absently rubbing his aching right pinkie finger. A grimace flickered across his face and he sighed tiredly. “If anything, your doing exactly what Simeon asked saved your life.”
“Lisa was so afraid,” Dale hissed between his clenched teeth.
“Nothing you could have said or done would have stopped Simeon from taking her. He would have killed you outright if you didn't do as he asked.”
Dale shook his head trying to banish the image of Lisa secured hand and foot sitting on the ground with a mine attached to her back. “What she went through ...” Dale tightened his hand over the console's edge, his knuckles whitening with his suppressed rage.
“It was horrific, yes. But she comported herself bravely, with dignity.”
Dale glanced up intensely at Young. “That doesn't make it right.”
“There's nothing right in this entire event, Dr Volker,” Young said harshly. His brow furrowed and he dipped his head. Silently mouthing, “damn,” Young stood, loosening his back with a shoulder shrug.
The Gate activated, its ring lit up and started its rotation toward a wormhole creation.
“You should be proud of Dr Park,” Young said descending the stairs coming to stand at the console with Dale.
Dale tore his attention from the incoming wormhole verification and stared sharply at Young. “I am,” he said with a fierce resoluteness expressed in the firm jut of his chin.
Young nodded then turned to stand just outside the wormhole's farthest limit into the room. He loosely clasped his hands behind his back.
After the gate stabilized into the room, Young's radio activated.
“Destiny, this is Scott. We have Dr Rush. Simeon is dead. Request permission to return to the ship.”
“Understood Lieutenant, come on through.” commands Young.
Members of the team start resolving through the event horizon, pulling off sunglasses, removing helmets, slinging rifles and opening flak jackets. Rush appears through the event horizon with Scott and slowly walked toward Young. Lieutenant James is the last person to step though.
She nodded at Dale and his fingers flitted efficiently over the panel to shut down the Gate. Dale came around the station, walking closer to hear Rush's explanation of Simeon's death. He wasn't a blood thirsty man. But he needed to hear Rush describe his battle with Simeon, if only to settle his own mind. The terror of these last days would bring nightmares. A counterpoint to that fear would help him sleep at night.
Rush stood swaying in his exhaustion slightly off of Young's left shoulder. His eyes steady, Rush stared at Young; no visible remorse, no words spoken. Young reached out open-handed, silently asking for Rush's purloined weapon. Rush pulled it from his waistband, handing it over with a slight nod. He dropped his backpack to the floor, glancing briefly at Scott, then walked straight-backed past Dale without a glance.
Dale whipped his head back around to Young puzzled that he let Rush leave without any explanation.
Young safed the weapon then gave it to Scott.
Lieutenant Scott removed his sunglasses and stared at Rush's departing back. He cocked his head and sighed, his face tightening as he pursed his lips. “He really lost it out there. Blames himself for Dr Perry's death.”
Young watched Rush's exit from the room. “He's partially correct. Ultimately, it's all my fault,” he said barely above a whisper. Young turned back to his second in command, nodded and walked away.
As Young walked past, Dale caught his eye, “Colonel ...”
“It's over, Mr Volker.” Young continued out of the Gate Room, his hands in his pockets his head down in thought.
