The first place I lived when I left my parents house at 17 is simple to demonstrate, read the description of the place that Rush is living in my AU The other way round.

The only difference was that we didn't have an extra strong door.

Yeah, that is frightening. Never lived in something as rundown as that or in that bad of a neighborhood. I guess, I've been lucky. So do you have an memories of the place ever being friendly?

It was two large semi-detached houses (I think you call it a duplex in America two houses that share a wall?) with a shared garden, owned by the same guy, all rented out as individual rooms wiht a shared kitchen and bathroom on each side.

There was a weird bunch of people there, I'd been thrown out/walked out of home, there were some smack addicts, a schizophrenic, a guy who later turned out to be a convicted paedophile, a load of stoners, a girl who'd been in social services care, a guy who was writing a book about organised crime and had no past, a couple who had been made bankrupt and needed somewhere cheap to live, a guy who worked in a music shop...a very weird selection of people.

The stoners were fine, the writer was good enough (and everyone else was scared of him so he kind of kept the behaviour sensible, he also always fielded the police when they turned up) the couple downstairs were cool , although if the stoners got too noisy, she'd threaten them with a wrench.

Luckily I only lived there for about four months or so I

That's is an eclectic group of people. They take old craftsman houses and turn them into student residences for kids going to UNO and UNMC, that's University of NE at Omaha and University Nebraska Medical Center for doctor residency/teaching/research school.

Like your first place, they have rooms rented out only to students with shared facilities.

I'd say you've had a wealth of wild experiences just from living in that one location.
