On this date in 1973, President Richard Nixon declared to the American people, "I am not a crook!"

As I was 6 years old at the time, I don't recall having an opinion, but I believe his assessment of himself is open to debate to this day...

I do remember that! I was in high school at the time.

I also remember this that happened on this date in 1968, even more vividly:

1968 - NBC preempts the final 1:05 minutes of a very close AFL football game between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders with Heidi, prompting an outrage amongst sport fans.

My dad and I were watching the game, and really didn't want to see Heidi, LOL!

Even though I was only 11 or so at the time, I was a watcher of football!

Since I was one I didn't weigh in on the football vs. Heidi debate, but obviously based on how it's handled nowadays, the sports fans won out. For the record I really liked Heidi. :)

As for Mr. Nixon, I don't think he was any worse than every other politician on the planet, but he sure opened our eyes and took the hero worship out of us when it comes to our government's leadership.

On this day in 1973 I was finishing Basic Training in the US Army and on vacation for 2 weeks before Advanced Training in Ft. Sill Lawton, Oklahoma
I was 19 and watched Nixon's speech.
I had voted for him and he was getting us out of the Vietnam War...He got caught doing what they all did/do
I forgive Dick and he was not a bad President over all.

Only Nixon could go to China

Yeah, Nixon was a crook but he will also be remembered for opening dialogue with China.

30 years from now, will Bush be remembered as anything but a warmonger? Will anyone say, "That estate tax cut really jump started the economy?" How many kids have been left behind by the education system? I think a few million people voted for Bush last time because they thought he would help them get ahead but most haven't while millions more are worse off.
