I think it's one of those realizations that is really hard to see if you aren't looking for it, but once you see it, it's obvious. Struck me like a bolt from the blue.
I think ginmar was the one who first articulated it, who I read.
Now that I think about it, it might have been ginmar who first articulated it plainly for me as well. I'd had the idea long before going online that at its core, homo-phobia really was based on fear, but never articulated exactly why some men were so afraid. Probably because I didn't want to admit to myself that there really are men who see women as nothing more than sex objects; it's painful to realize that some folks simply do not see you as a fellow human being.
I remember once, during a psychology class in high school (I think my junior year), we got into a heated debate about homosexuality. This one guy named Adam, who was one of those typical Republican loudmouths, the type who are large, fat, wear slacks and button shirts and have close-cropped hair, was loudly proclaiming that it was disgusting. I asked him why he was concerned with this, and he said "Because I don't want some guy's dick in my ass
