No, it was also funny to my girlfriend, who's never read (or watched) Tolkien. I think you get the idea of the same themes--a dark lord who's rising again, and a magic artifact that's missing, etc.--from all kinds of popular culture today, because Tolkien's stuff has been an example for so many.
