I am genuinely fascinated by your art! Can I ask... what sources do you use for the text? Is all of the text you use purposeful to the piece? So you prepaint before cutting, or form the collage and then paint?
I just love how powerful your work is. And how engaging it is even before you start digging deeper into the words.
All of the text in this one came from an old copy of E.B. White's "The Trumpet of the Swan," which was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. Generally, when I do a project like this, all the text comes from a single source ... unless that "single source" is "magazines" (when I do stuff with text all from magazines).
My "Giving Tree" collage was made entirely from a book of Irish folk and fairy tales. It wasn't as relevant to the piece as "Trumpet" was for this project, but "Giving Tree" was a picture of a pupa/woman sleeping beneath a tree, so a collection of fairy tales felt appropriate.
As for the process, I usually paint the book pages, then spray them with fixative so that the paint won't smear when I start applying the glue, and only then do I start cutting things up. I usually end up with about 10 times more painted pages than I need, because the actual process of assembling the picture is very unpredictable/spontaneous, and so I prep for many eventualities.
The art we're showing at Sweet Adeline's (through the end of October) is for sale, as well, so if you have friends who like slightly disturbing collage, send them our way. (Actually, mine is probably the only disturbing piece. Most people only send their "pretty" stuff to shows. Come to think of it, most people only *do* pretty art. What's up with that?)
