Look for HandBrake - free program to let you make a backup copy of a DVD. Then you should be able to use MPEG Streamclip on the file.

Unfortunately, it looks like HandBrake has moved on in the world and no longer supports Mac OS X 10.5.8, which is what I'm running. Curses! Foiled by advancing technology!

For just making clips, I would use virtual dub on files ripped with dvd decrypter, both of which are free. Vdub will create divx or xvid avis, and if you need them in another format, you can use any video converter, also free, and no watermark. Vdub can append clips to each other and substitute audio, but if you actually want to edit a vid to music, you can use windows movie maker to get a taste. And then if it's something you really want to spend time on, you'll need a decent editor to do a good job. I don't know of any freebes, but you should be able to get a slightly-out-of-date version of Premier or Vegas off ebay for a reasonable price. Certainly less than $50. Good luck!

I will have to check these out, since HandBrake (suggested by another friend, above) no longer works for my OS. Thank you for the suggestions!

And of course I *do* still have some friends from my fandom days! :) We just don't interact as much as we once did.

Ack! Unfortunately, the DVD Decrypter software only works for PCs, and I'm a Macintosh gal. I'll keep looking. Thanks, though.
