I've written a number of journal entries (both here and on my personal website) about stuff I like, including favorite movies, favorite books, favorite playwrights, etc. But what about the opposite category?

Things I Don't Like(not including obvious stuff like bigots, hypocrisy, pedophiles, stupid people, Nazis, etc ( Read more... )

food, tv, lists, movies, books, stuff i don't like, me, biking

- things that unexpectedly jump out at you from the shadows (even if just in a movie)

I was put off watching the later seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer for a long time because most of season 1 uses every stupid low-budget video horror film-making cliché ever. (Especially "you look right! you look left! the camera pans left! the camera pans back right AND THERE'S A MONSTER STANDING NEXT TO YOU shock boo scream" Like people don't have peripheral vision.)

What a great list! I love this.

But what didn't you like about Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? I didn't love it (in fact, there were parts I didn't like), but it wouldn't make my "don't like" list.

Ones where we especially agree include: I Love Lucy, Scientology, wasps, misplaced modifiers, car alarms, Ayn Rand, telemarketers, websites with soundtracks, and probably more.

I thought Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell had some really interesting moments, some interesting ideas, some interesting scenes ... but I thought the novel was maybe 600 pages too long. There were long portions of perhaps 200 pages at a stretch where I was bored out of my mind. My "don't like" is, I'm sure, largely a reaction to the fact that everyone else told me how great the book was, and I was very disappointed when I read it. To be honest, I felt like I had wasted way too many hours of my time on it.
