I'm halfway through The Big Sleep now, and -- bam! -- hello to the homophobia! It's been almost 20 years since I read this book, and I don't remember being offended the last time, but I can't imagine how I wasn't. Might be helpful to bear in mind that while the slurs and descriptions are certainly homophobic, the comments about needing to avoid jail are straightforward history, and worth remembering.

I haven't read Chandler in a long time and you're not making me eager to do it now. :-)
