Kimber’s mental shields had shut down the moment the seance had connected. She’d never actually been to one before so couldn’t anticipate the results, the maelstrom of residual psychic energy remaining in this small suburban Chicago house was overwhelming. A mad vortex of pain, confusion, and fear was grasping and tearing at her mind; ( Read more... )

In the physical plane, the wrath of the enraged gestalt of spirits became immediately visible, force rippling through the walls, knocking picture frames off of walls, a vase shattered in another room ( ... )

She desperately drew more and more energy through the link to the reality plane. Focusing her thoughts on strengthening and expanding her mental shields, she called upon the form of the Death God she knew.

"MORRIGAN! I CALL UPON YOU NOW TO HELP ME DISPERSE AND CALM THESE POOR CONFUSED SOULS, LOST AND WANDERING BETWIXT THE LAND OF LIVING AND DEAD!!"

She pushed her shielding around the Doctor, the dark mass reacting, retreating, releasing the gestalt and realizing their own identities again.

Kimber assured herself that they were calming and settling before she went to the Doctor, kneeling at his side, putting her arms around him, probing with her mind to make sure he was well. Moving to kneel in front of him, trying to get a look at his face, to let him know how sorry she was for being so slow, just to see that wonky smile.

Relived he was well and back in the room, so to speak, she took a moment to reach out and feel the room. As she'd hoped, the spirits that retained sentience were separating and calming. The older ones, the ones who were now just fear and anger congealed into energy had retreated.

"I don't think that will be necessary now. I think the majority can be helped along." She glanced back at the dark cloud behind them. "Those few are going to be the problem. They have no intellect left, they're going to have to be pushed out, uprooted somehow."

She felt the ward around her neck glow warm and looked down. The symbols were glowing, pulsing golden light.

"What did Dean say this is again?"

She watched the last of the remnants float through the gateway and let loose the strand of contact with Dean. As soon as she felt his consciousness disconnect her shielding collapsed and she dropped boneless to the floor. Her mind clung tenuously to the contact with her physical self and she reached her astral hand toward the Doctor.

"Cachi." she cursed weakly. "Going to need help getting back, I think."

"Oi," The Doctor murmured, still a little bit mesmerized by the sight of spirits transitioning to an extraplanar reality, "don't get clever in Celtic."

And then he dropped to one knee beside her, focusing up, sliding his hand into hers like it was born to be there, and giving that a squeeze.

"Back is easy. Shake of a lamb's tail."

"Well, two shakes."

And there came a rush like surfacing from deep water, like rising through a vertical tunnel towards light--

--like dying in reverse.

Physical sensations spiraled back into his neural traffic as his astral form reconnected with his biology, he gasped air back into his respiratory system.

He blinked twice, tried to get traction on the non-astral version of the room, everything looked different again.

And then The Doctor whipped his head around to look sharply at Kimber Mac, make sure she settled in all right. "Kim?"

She opened her eyes when she heard him call her name. The ceiling seemed corporeal, so she knew she'd transitioned back. She also realized that she wasn't sitting anymore. One attempt to move her arms told her that pretty much every subatomic particle in her entire being was drained.

Rasping through a desert dry throat as loudly as she could, "Oi, could one a you blokes give us a 'and up? An' a beer, per'aps?"

Dean's hand shot out to the redhead's, clasping her forearm and giving her the added impetus to rise when she was ready. "We don't have beers on site but there's plenty in a fridge back at the motel. Or we could hit up a Gas'n'Sip on the way back for road beers?"

"Water might be a better idea," Sam mother-henned as he helped The Doctor to his rubber-soled feet. "Hydrate first, then beers."

"She's got like Wolverine's liver, right?" Dean scoffed. "I bet she can put 'em away no sweat."

"I'll take a tea, thanks, lots of tannin for the synapses, mine feel a wee bit barbecued," The Doctor laughed faintly.

"Tetley or PG Tips?" Sam asked automatically.

Dean stared at him. "You have been spending way too much time with Limeys lately."

"I, uh, made sure to pack some for the trip when I realized we'd be teaming with The Doctor on this caper," Sam shrugged.

"PG Tips'd be brilliant, thanks," The Doctor grinned.

"Teacher's pet," Dean grumbled.
