My Table
He's late but Lisa doesn't fault him for it. It's a long way from Manhattan to Princeton and he doesn't drive.
She's already prepped and on the table, awaiting the sonogram that will peek into her expanding womb, giving her another look at her unborn child. Julian finally arrives, makes an entrance, as he tends to do. She doesn't fault him for that, either. He's a performer, after all.
"Okay," says the technician and begins the scan. Julian takes her hand and squeezes it, transmits his excitement to her. She watches him as he stares intently at the screen. The snow-static begins to resolve itself into recognizable human parts.
"That's the head," Julian says, points, barely able to contain himself. The tech nods and points out the baby's spine which looks like nothing so much as a string of pearls. Tiny arms and legs move fitfully in response to the pressure of the wand. Lisa can feel it, but the movement on the screen seems much much stronger than her perception of gentle taps and nudges from inside.
"Do you want to know the sex?" the tech asks.
"No!" Julian and Lisa say in unison, then laugh. "You like surprises?" Lisa says to Julian. The tech raises an eyebrow at her flirty tone.
Julian blows out some pent-up tension, looks down at her. "In this case? Yeah. I'm sure it'll either be a boy or a girl... Does it matter to you, which one?"
"I don't care," Lisa says. "I just want a healthy baby."
"Then that's good enough for me," he says, leans over and tenderly kisses her forehead.
The tech clears his throat then announces that everything looks good but Dr. Goss will give her a better assessment at her next appointment. He turns off the machine, helps Lisa clean the gel off her belly and departs, leaving Julian holding a snapshot of the fetus.
Julian can't take his eyes off the photo and Lisa is amused by his bemusement until he softly says, "This is my heart's child," and presses the photo against his chest. Lisa's amusement morphs into love that suddenly blows through her, so powerful it takes her breath away.
